Apresentação Pessoal

Associate Professor with Aggregation in the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Porto, where I teach since 1987. I have a degree in sociology from the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at Universidade Nova de Lisboa and a doctorate in sociology from 2003 from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Porto (FLUP). Between 2008 and 2010 I did a post-doctorate in sociology at FLUP and the University of Padua (Italy) on the topic of immigration, ethnicities, and religion. In 2011, I was a Visiting Professor in the Department of Theology at the University of Uppsala (Sweden) and in 2017 I was in the USA with a scholarship from the State Department, under the Fulbright Program “Religious Pluralism”. I was a member of the Council of the International Society for the Sociology of Religion, a representative of the Iberian Peninsula (2013-2021), and national coordinator of the EUREL network (Sociological and Legal Data on Religions in Europe and Beyond). I was also a member of the board of the Portuguese Association of Sociology (APS),  between 1998and 2000 and, in 2018, I founded and became coordinator of the Sociology of Religion section of APS.

I am currently a member of the board of the Sociology Department and the board of the Ph.D. course in Sociology. I was director of the Master's course in Sociology at FLUP from 2005 to 2008 and a member of its Monitoring Committee (2012-2019). I was the supervisor of several master's and doctoral dissertations and participated in panels of academic tests. I have created continuous training courses on various topics in the field of sociology of religion.

I am an integrated researcher at the Institute of Sociology of the University of Porto (IS-UP), having been one of the founders and members of the first board. I coordinated the research group “Social Recompositions and Territory” until 2020. I am a collaborator researcher at the Center for Research in Theology and Religious Studies (CITER) at the Portuguese Catholic University.
My scientific work has focused predominantly on religion, e.g., religious pluralism; migrations, ethnicity, and religion; Portuguese Catholicism, new Protestant and Evangelical communities in the city. These themes have been investigated fundamentally in various international and national networks and projects, of which the following stand out: “Religious Identities and Social Dynamics in the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon” (2018-2019), funded by the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation; the projects carried out within the scope of the GERICR network, “L'Eglise Catholique face aux nouveaux défis éthiques, sociaux et politiques, poses dans les pays d'Europe Occidentale de tradition catholique” (2007-2010) and “Las consecuencias sociales de la nueva pluralidad religiosa in European countries with a historic Catholic majority ”(2009-2013), both financed by the Spanish Ministry of Science; “Immigration, ethnicity and religion: Eastern European religious and immigrant communities” (2008-2010), supported by the Foundation for Science and Technology; “Church and Religion in an Enlarged Europe” (2004-2008), supported by the Volkswagen Foundation; "Religious and Moral Pluralism" (1995-2001) and funded by the European Science Foundation. I currently continue to participate in ongoing projects of the EUREL network and as a member of the international project team European Interdisciplinary Master African Studies (EIMAS), funded by the European Commission and with a budget of 2,936 million euros and started in December 2019.

Among published works, we highlight the books: Da Torre de Babel às terras prometidas (From the Tower of Babel to the Promised Lands), Afrontamento, 2006; Religião em movimento: migrações e comunidades religiosas na Itália e em Prtugal, Estratégias Criativas (Religion in movement: migrations and religious communities in Italy and in Portugal) (in H.
