Gabriel Bernardo received his Ph.D. degree in Materials Science from the University of Oxford in 2005. He then worked as postdoctoral fellow at New University of Lisbon (2005-2006) and Technical University of Lisbon (IST) (2006-2009).

From July 2009 to June 2015, he worked as Assistant Researcher at the Institute for Polymers and Composites (IPC), Polymer Engineering department at the University of Minho. Meanwhile, in 2010, he was awarded a Fulbright scholarship that led him to the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta, USA), where he worked from October 2010 to March 2011.

In 2015, he was awarded a Marie Sklodowska-Curie (MSC) individual fellowship, by the European Commission, that led him to the U.K. where he worked for 2 years at the University of Sheffield (Physics department) and at the ISIS Neutron Spallation Source at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. During his MSC fellowship he specialized in the use of neutron scattering techniques to probe nano-structures.

After returning to Portugal, he joined LEPABE - department of Chemical Engineering at University of Porto. In 2019, he was awarded an Assistant Researcher contract (individual CEEC) from "Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia". He is currently Assistant Researcher at LEPABE.

Gabriel does research in Materials Science (with an emphasis on Polymeric Materials), Physical-Chemistry and Nanotechnology. He is currently working on the "Upscaling and morphological characterization of organic photovoltaic devices" and "Polymer-based carbon membranes for gas purification".
