Objectives
To acquire knowledge related to the main renewable energy technologies. Simplified methods for thermal and photovoltaic systems. Economic and environmental evaluation of renewable energy systems.
Program
INTRODUCTION – GENERALITIES: Energy, definition and concepts, brief history of its use; energy consumption - repartition by source and use in Portugal and EU; future perspectives; the energy service concept.
ENERGIA AND ENVIRONMENT – RENEWABLE ENERGIES: Environmental problems related to the use of energy; energetic problems of modern society; renewable energy sources – solar, wind, biomass, hydro, geothermal, wave; renewable energies and sustainable development – present and future position in the energetic context.
THERMAL SOLAR ENERGY: Solar geometry and solar resources; calculation of incident solar radiation on inclined surfaces; thermal solar collectors without or with low concentration – types and applications; water heating systems (domestic and pools), space heating, space cooling, process heating; simplified calculation methods – f-chart, fi-chart, fi,f-chart.
PHOTOVOLTAIC SOLAR ENERGY: solar cells and its efficiency; photovoltaic collectors and integration in buildings; electricity production systems; simplified calculation methods – PV f-chart.
HYDRIC ENERGY: Origin and present status of hydro technology; type and classification of plants; an approach to design simplified methods of the main components; hydraulic regime and resource assessment; main types of hydraulic turbines and its applications.
WIND ENERGY: Origin, general circulation and local effects; characterization of the wind regime and resource assessment; rotor aerodynamics; main characteristics and energy converted by wind turbines; isolated and grid-connected systems.
ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS OF RENEWABLE ENERGY SYSTEMS: The market and the barriers; external and internal costs; cost of useful energy; economic and environmental evaluation methods; legislation and support schemes for the use of renewable sources of energy.

Teaching methods and learning activities
The couse will include theoretical and theoretical/practical sessions. In the theoretical sessions concepts and methodologies are presented and the solution of some practical typical problems is discussed. Theoretical/practical sessions complement the theoretical sessions and are devoted to the solution of questions and problems as well as to demonstration of the use of some software. Technical visits contribute to the transmission of concepts and knowledge, giving the opportunity to discuss real situations and problems.
Evaluation Type
Distributed evaluation with final exam
