“On Doing Consequential Experiments In Management Research”

The fail-safe way to make causal claims is to undertake a randomized experiment. I will showcase the basics of experimentation and highlight why experiments are so powerful for making causal claims. Unfortunately, many of the experiments undertaken by management scholars are not informative for policy because the information environment given to participants is usually contrived, choices or decisions are usually hypothetical, or there are demand effects or endogeneity problems. I will thus cover a range of experimental designs to address research questions that are relevant for policy by showing how to make experiments more consequential, relevant, and robust. In addition, I will showcase the utility of experimentally-randomized instrumental variables for the case of endogenous regressors that cannot be manipulated and how to correctly undertake tests of mediation. If time permits, we will very briefly discuss some of the basics of “natural experiments” (regression discontinuity and difference-in-differences designs) for cases were manipulation is not possible or big samples cannot be harnessed, or where a manipulation has occurred already.
