“Empirical methods for policy evaluation”
Mónica Costa Dias - Cef.up, School of Economics, Bristol University and Institute for Fiscal Studies
This course deals with the problem of quantifying the causal effects of an intervention, or ‘treatment’, when agents’ selection decisions determine their exposure to that treatment. We will focus on some of the most frequently used empirical methods in the applied microeconometrics literature. It will discuss the evaluation problem and methods addressing it in a critical manner, with a focus on the underlying assumptions, identification strategies, parameters identified under different conditions, and relative merits and weaknesses. The course will also show how to implement estimation using different methods, and discuss examples of the use of alternative methods in the recent literature.
