Consolidate strategies in the detection of problems and adequacy of solutions in the field of the relationship between text and illustration.

Print Studio

OIM01 - ECTS Print studio is dedicated to realizing graphic projects within printmaking and discusses how to do it using techniques. The UC is based on practice in a fine art print studio context and on the study of its flexibility, depending on the student's profile. Based on graphic techniques, systems, and strategies, it proposes concrete problems, and with these, it models the development of an individualized process. This approach aims to relate the student's creative needs to the use of printmaking as an exploratory and communicative tool. The printing and graphic techniques of metal, wood, stone, and stamping processes, defined annually, respond to experimental interests and continuously review their disciplinary limits. The in situ workshop immersion in varied environments, the sensitive presence of materials, processes, and resources, stimulates creation, and the student is encouraged to question the technological application, the means in an analytical, experimental, and expansive way

Illustration Project

PIL01 - ECTS

The UC of Illustration Practices aims to develop a set of skills for the artistic, scientific, and professional performance of students:

Recognizing the different fields and functions of illustration;

Accessing historical knowledge and contemporary production in illustration;

Engaging directly with authorial practices, processes, and specific techniques;

Implementing strategies and working methods within the project context;

Constructing narratives by appropriately relating textual and visual information;

Meeting programmatic and functional needs in different contexts;

Considering different audiences and recipients;

Acquiring technical and procedural tools;

Identifying problems and adapting solutions;

Stimulating productivity and autonomy with a focus on professional activity.

Illustration Seminars

IS01 - ECTS It is intended that each student develops and acquires, throughout the semester, technical and authorial skills through the different inputs provided by guest authors, as well as the maturation of their critical and design discourse in the construction and positioning of artifacts illustrated in the contemporary context of illustration practice.

Students are encouraged to develop a daily notebook that testifies and archives the experiences developed both in the workshop format and in the sharing and exchange of experiences with professionals with recognition in the area.

The CU (curricular Unit) also has as its main objective the creation of networks in an insertion of students in the community of relevant authors, through the exploration of different areas and contexts of illustration through the individual vision coming from professionals of the field, invited to share with the students their design methodologies in illustration practice and market perspectives and possibilities in illustration.

Edition and Print

EI01 - ECTS Edition and Print aim to develop a self-proposed editing project in a professional workshop context and use graphic techniques within the scope of Engraving and printing. To this end, we work on the proposal's definition, adapting it to the requirements established by the chosen graphic technique. Throughout the various stages of resolution, the choice of subjects, development of own knowledge, and deepening of the potential of the editing processes of the author's original work are carried out. The steps and procedural and technological methodologies introduced support the review of studio work and expressive aspects that intervene in the creative development of an editing project. In this way, it addresses the documentation, the digital stages until its implementation, and the professional use of analog processes while maintaining the experimental character and efficiency in production. Depending on the group, different graphic possibilities are explored to ensure the value of the edited project.

History and Culture of Illustration

HCI01 - ECTS

This course unit of History and Culture of Illustration aims to present illustration as a complex ecosystem that traditionally exists in different habitats and that interacts and cohabits with multiple specimens and structures of the same habitat - text, graphics, book, poster, among others.

Observe and analyse the Illustration, according to a hermeneutic perspective where the narrative context of the order, the habitat or the authorial, social and historical context in which it is carried out is not isolated.

It is intended to raise awareness and knowledge of the field of illustration and its importance as a cultural and communication repository.

Understand the field of historical investigation of illustration by recognizing the evolution of different visual and textual resources, among others, that constitute its heritage, the skills of its authors, the correlation between different areas of knowledge and extend its scope of action, contributing to increase your interpretive community.

Understand and know the present moment of Illustration, through a broad historical vision resulting in a greater assertion as a narrative activity and field of investigation.

Research Methodologies

METINV01 - ECTS The UC of Research Methodologies aims to implement and integrate scientific writing in relation to research practice. It aims to equip students with the skills to structure, organize, and write academic texts across various domains and formats, with particular attention to peer-reviewed publication. By focusing on the fundamental areas of research and communication in scientific work - argumentation, approach, problematics, and structure - it also aims to familiarize students with research tools and the scientific production in their field of study.

Editorial Design Practices

PDED01 - ECTS It is intended that students, at the end of the CU, will have acquired theoretical and practical knowledge necessary for the development of editorial projects, in their various options and typologies, from the most experimental to industrial production, with a view to their connection to illustration.

It is intended that students become familiar with editing and text and image composition programs and know how to produce their own editions, combining text and image into coherent graphic artifacts.
It is also intended that students have acquired: historical knowledge about publishing over time and illustrated publishing culture; theoretical knowledge about the characteristics and semantics of editorial artefacts and their purposes; formal and aesthetic knowledge about the design of editorial graphic artefacts; knowledge of a technical nature, relating to editorial design and typography, pre-production, production and post-production processes.

Finally, it is intended that the knowledge acquired includes the production and distribution of printed artefacts, but also the development of digital editions, as well as knowledge about consumption and distribution in new media.

Illustration Project

PILUS01 - ECTS Acknowledge fields, authors and reference projects in the practice of Illustration;

Understand the various functions of illustration in history and in different contemporary contexts of communication;

Master specific concepts and vocabulary within the scope of the project;

Acquire research and information archiving tools for practical application;

Knowing how to interpret texts and adapt visual signs to verbal narratives;

Apply theoretical and practical knowledge in terms of techniques, materials and supports, targeting different artefacts, audiences and functions;

Consolidate different work methodologies;
