Objectives

The UC of Illustration Practices aims to develop a set of skills for the artistic, scientific, and professional performance of students:

Recognizing the different fields and functions of illustration;

Accessing historical knowledge and contemporary production in illustration;

Engaging directly with authorial practices, processes, and specific techniques;

Implementing strategies and working methods within the project context;

Constructing narratives by appropriately relating textual and visual information;

Meeting programmatic and functional needs in different contexts;

Considering different audiences and recipients;

Acquiring technical and procedural tools;

Identifying problems and adapting solutions;

Stimulating productivity and autonomy with a focus on professional activity.

Learning outcomes and competences

The teaching methodologies are geared towards achieving the learning objectives as they provide access and create conditions for the development of the stated competencies. The sharing of theoretical and practical knowledge aims to make the approach accessible and inclusive. The coordinated execution of diverse and sequenced exercises seeks to equip students with the experience necessary for autonomy. Individual and collective support fosters collaborative, discussed, persistent, and continuously updated work, simulating professional practice. The direct contact with authors and their respective processes aims to consolidate students' conceptual and technical knowledge, allowing them to intimately understand specific approaches and styles. This knowledge enables the reformulation of criteria and the emphasis on concrete strategies, enhancing the conceptual and technical quality required for professional illustration in the job market.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The teaching methodologies are based on exposition, questioning, demonstration, and collective and individual supervised activities. The activities include research and organization of visual and textual information, analysis of relevant images and cases, experimentation, development of alternatives, and selection and deepening of solutions.

The assessment is weighted based on students' engagement with the course, participation, and collaboration in the context of the assignments and tasks to be developed. The assessment focuses on the overall work portfolio, including research and organization of information, experimentally and in-depth executed exercises, considering the strategies as well as the project and procedural qualities.

The assessment is distributed, without a final exam, and is divided into two components: works developed in accordance with the presented proposals (70%) and class participation (30%).
