Objectives

It is intended that students, at the end of the CU, will have acquired theoretical and practical knowledge necessary for the development of editorial projects, in their various options and typologies, from the most experimental to industrial production, with a view to their connection to illustration.

It is intended that students become familiar with editing and text and image composition programs and know how to produce their own editions, combining text and image into coherent graphic artifacts.
It is also intended that students have acquired: historical knowledge about publishing over time and illustrated publishing culture; theoretical knowledge about the characteristics and semantics of editorial artefacts and their purposes; formal and aesthetic knowledge about the design of editorial graphic artefacts; knowledge of a technical nature, relating to editorial design and typography, pre-production, production and post-production processes.

Finally, it is intended that the knowledge acquired includes the production and distribution of printed artefacts, but also the development of digital editions, as well as knowledge about consumption and distribution in new media.

Learning outcomes and competences

The coherence of the program contents with the learning objectives is verifiable through the articulation between theoretical and practical knowledge, which is listed in the program in 9 points, and which supports the general objective aimed at understanding and practicing editorial design.

In this sense, the program contents include comprehensive and necessary information and knowledge about the editorial universe and its multiple meanings; knowledge about operational and editorial production aspects; knowledge of current editing technologies; knowledge about the structuring elements of editorial design, materials and editorial reproduction systems.

In the practical part, the contents are aimed at exercising and interconnecting this theoretical knowledge with practical experimental tests, editorial projects, whether physical or in digital media.

This intersection of knowledge thus encompasses the objectives of the curricular unit that translate into the scholarly practice of editorial design.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The curricular unit Editorial Design Practices is developed according to a theoretical-practical model, alternating moments of content exposure with spaces for rehearsal and practice — for the development and elaboration of editorial models and projects —, as well as discussion and critical monitoring of projects. The classroom functions as a laboratory space for study and production. Attendance by students is fundamental and mandatory for the design, development and discussion of projects.

The assessment is distributed without a final exam. The final classification is calculated based on the weighted average of the evaluation of practical projects and requested studies (80%), in conjunction with the qualitative evaluation of attendance and participation in classes and other teaching activities (20%).
