Abstract (EN):
This article presents and describes the LCA4Power tool, developed with the aim of assessing the potential environmental impact of electricity production in Portugal. This tool is based on a life cycle perspective, considering the life cycle of the various technologies available for electricity generation. It was implemented in MS Excel (TM) using emission factors obtained from the literature, instead of raw life cycle inventory data. The current version of the tool includes wind and hydroelectric power, as renewable energy sources, and also, thermal and combined heat and power generation from fossil fuels, which are the sources of more than 80% of the electricity generated in mainland Portugal. Results were validated comparing the tool predictions with data from other LCA studies for electricity production, showing a good agreement, in particular for the greenhouse gas emissions. The added-value of this tool is to provide an user-friendly way of simulating the environmental impacts of endogenous different energy mixes in Portugal and thus support decision making and communication. Future developments will include other technologies for electricity generation, the tool application in supporting decision-making through the analysis of future scenarios for electricity production in Portugal.
