I graduated in Veterinary Medicine in 1997 and began my academic career teaching veterinary pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) until 2000 when I started lecturing pharmacology at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar of the University of Porto (ICBAS-UP).
In 2004 I presented my Pedagogical and Scientific Capability theses, and in 2011 I completed a PhD in Biomedical Sciences at ICBAS-UP.

As an assistant professor, I have taught Physiology, Ethology, and Pharmacology to both undergraduate and postgraduate students in veterinary medicine, aquatic science, medicine, biochemistry, and bioengineering. Additionally, I teach "Drugs for Veterinary Use" to pre- and post-graduate pharmaceutical students at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto (FFUP), and "Laboratory Animal Sciences" at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto (FMUP).

I have been responsible for the rodent animal house facility and was one of the founding members of both the Ethical Committee and the Animal Welfare Body at ICBAS-UP. I hold a master’s degree in Laboratory Animal Science & Welfare (FELASA category D) from the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), and a post-graduate qualification in Behavioral Diseases in companion animals from the Portuguese Institute of Psychology.

Throughout my career, I have tutored dozens of undergraduate and master's theses and am currently supervising or co-supervising several doctoral theses. I have authored numerous articles published in internationally indexed journals.
My primary research interests include: 1) The influence of chronic diseases and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) on the gut and kidney; 2) Pet behavioral problems and 3) Laboratory animal sciences.
