Objectives

Acquisition and improvement of methodologies for the search, analysis and written and oral synthesis of specialized literature, in particular topics of aquaculture and fisheries.

Provide the opportunity for the master's student to deepen knowledge in his / her area of specialization, in a teaching-learning experience that, at an individual level, simulates to some extent the making of the original Introduction of a Dissertation or a 2nd cycle Internship Report.

Learning outcomes and competences

Being able to plan and integrate into the organization of a seminar, consisting of a series of successive thematic presentations.

Acquire skills to publicly present a thematic synthesis in a longer period of time, in the form of a lecture addressed to the audience with scientific culture, subject to interaction through questioning and its defence.

Have security in public presentations and before a jury.

Working method

Program

The contents will vary depending on the topics of the works done and presented by students, within the vast area of Marine Sciences and particularly of its Resources, both in contexts of fundamental research (from the molecule to the ecosystem) or applied science and technology (from production to valorization of products and services), bearing in mind the context of a specialization in Aquaculture and Fisheries.

Mandatory literature

n.a. (ver observações - see observations); n.a. (ver observações - see observations)

Comments from the literature

Scientific journal articles (mainly from international journals), books, manuals, reports, and other information sources selected according to the seminar topic chosen by the students.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Tutorial guidance, with counselling sessions, in individual or group discussion, and monitoring of the writing and delivery (in digital PDF format) of a monographic document of synthesis and critical review (with recommended minimum extension of 20 and maximum of 40 pages), on the topic chosen for integration into the seminar, subject to presentation and discussion.

Evaluation Type

Evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Prova oral 30,00
Trabalho escrito 70,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Apresentação/discussão de um trabalho científico 2,00
Frequência das aulas 8,00
Trabalho escrito 125,00
Total: 135,00

Eligibility for exams

According to the UPorto standards. Presence in 3/4 of the tutorial classes.

Calculation formula of final grade

The evaluation results from the balance between the monograph quality classification (70%), and demonstrated ability in individual integration in the seminar session/sessions, with emphasis on the quality of both the oral presentation (15 to 20 min) and defence before the questions (30%).

Examinations or Special Assignments

Writing and delivery (1 digital file, in PDF) of an original monographic document, with a minimum recommended length of 20 and a maximum of 40 pages, of synthesis and critical review of the topic chosen for integration in the seminar. The work is subject to oral presentation and discussion. Delivery is made the day before the presentation.

The student must follow the formatting instructions given in the 1st class. The style of placement of citations in the text and list of references will be that of the international journal Aquatic Toxicology (from Elsevier).

To encourage the increase of individual scientific writing skills, taking into account that it is the lingua franca in the international context, the use of the English language is recommended.

Classification improvement

Delivery and presentation of a new Seminar on a new topic.

Observations

Tutorial sessions will be held, scheduled at a formal time, in which students discuss the topics covered and present their progress.
