Apresentação Pessoal

Rui Henrique was born in Porto in 1968 and received the M.D. from the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Porto (ICBAS-UP) in 1992.

After completing the general medical internship at Hospital Geral de Sto. António – Porto (1993-1994), he became resident in Anatomic Pathology at the Portuguese Oncology Institute Porto (IPO Porto), under the supervision of Prof. Carlos Lopes. During this period, he subspecialized in Hematopathology following a 3-month training period at the Catholic University Hospitals in Leuven, Belgium, under the supervision of Prof. Christiane De Wolf-Peeters.

He remained affiliated with IPO Porto as attending (2001-2015), consultant (2015-2022), and senior consultant(since October 2022) pathologist. He was appointed Director of the Department of Pathology in May 2006, also supervising the diagnostic areas of Hematopathology, Uropathology and Nephropathology. In February 2011, he was appointed Director of the Department of Education (EPOP). He resigned from both positions in June 2019 after his appointment as Chairman of the Board of Directors of IPO Porto, position in which remained until October 2022. He was re-appointed Director of the Department of Pathology in February 2023 and of the Department of Education in February 2024.
In 2006, he received the Ph.D. in Medical Sciences (Molecular Pathology) at ICBAS-UP, with a thesis on epigenetic heterogeneity of prostate cancer and precursor lesions, which was in part performed at the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, USA, under the supervision of Prof. David Sidransky. In 2011, he obtained the academical title of “Aggregate” (Habilitation) in Pathology and Molecular Genetics from ICBAS-UP.

As guest Full Professor at the Department of Pathology and Molecular Immunology of ICBAS-UP, he coordinates and lectures the curricular units of Pathology and Anatomic Pathology to the integrated master degrees in Medicine and in Dental Medicine, in addition to the coordination of the curricular units of Oncobiology (M.Sc. courses in Biochemistry and in Bioengeneering), Oncologic Pathology (M.Sc. in Oncology) and Pathology of Neoplasia (Ph.D. course in Pathology and Molecular Genetics)

His diagnostic and research interests are mainly focused in Hematopathology and Uropathology, and are devoted to the understanding of the role of epigenetic alterations in tumorigenesis, as well as the development of novel cancer biomarkers based on the epigenetic and genetic characterization of tumors.

He has authored or co-authored more than 400 publications in international peer-reviewed scientific periodicals, including book chapters,editorials/commentaries, review papers and original papers. Has supervised or co-supervised 1 post-doctoral fellow (already to completion), 29 PhD students (15 already to completion) and 74 MSc students (67 already to completion).
