Renato Ferreira da Silva (MPharm, PhD) is a Pharmacist, recognized by the Portuguese Pharmaceutical Society. He obtained a Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto (2019), and a PhD in Clinical Research and Health Services (2024) from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto (FMUP).
Currently, he is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Community Medicine, Information, and Health Decision Sciences at FMUP, where he teaches in the fields of clinical research methodologies, health technology assessment, evidence synthesis and evaluation, health decision-making, digital health, biostatistics, data analysis, and pharmacovigilance and pharmacoepidemiology. Additionally, RFS is a Pharmacovigilance & Pharmacoepidemiology Expert at the Porto Pharmacovigilance Centre of the Portuguese Pharmacovigilance System (INFARMED, I.P.).
RFS is also an Integrated Researcher at RISE-Health, the largest health research unit in Portugal, integrated within Thematic Line 6 – Digital Transformation, Artificial Intelligence, Data and Decision Sciences in Health, and a Collaborating Researcher in the Pharmacotherapy & Pharmacovigilance group of the Algarve Biomedical Research and Training Center (ABC-RI). RFS’s research activities predominantly focus on drug safety, particularly in pharmacovigilance and pharmacoepidemiology, integrating these areas with clinical research methodologies, health technology assessment, digital health, evidence synthesis - including systematic reviews and meta-analyses - and clinical epidemiology. He has expertise in the design and execution of post-marketing surveillance studies to evaluate drug safety, effectiveness, and utilization patterns, actively contributing to their conception, planning, and implementation. RFS is also involved in multiple national and international research projects supported by competitive funding calls. Currently, he leads the VIGIA project (COMPETE2030-FEDER-02045600) as Principal Investigator at FMUP.
He is also an active member of several professional and scientific organisations at both national and international levels, including:
• Secretary of the General Assembly of the Portuguese Society of Healthcare Pharmacists;
• President of the General Assembly of the Portuguese Association of Young Pharmacists;
• Member of the Clinical Trials Interest Group of the Portuguese Pharmaceutical Society;
• Member of the Specialized Sections on Research & Clinical Trials and Regulatory Affairs & Quality of the Portuguese Society of Healthcare Pharmacists;
• Member of the Real-World Evidence and Big Data Group of the International Society of Pharmacovigilance;
• Member of the Cochrane Collaboration & Porto Associate Center of Cochrane Portugal;
• Member of the Portuguese Society of Pharmacology.
