The Almeida Garrett Programme is a national mobility program, created at the initiative of the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities (CRUP), with the aim of promoting quality and strengthening the national dimension of Higher Education.

It offers the possibility of a study period at a National Host University with complete academic recognition. Student mobility also covers internships, end-of-course work, or final projects as long as these activities are part of the course curriculum at the university of origin.

What is it?

• It is an individual mobility program;
• Regulated by the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities (CRUP): Almeida Garrett Programme Regulations ;
• It involves the student, the home Higher Education Institution (HEI), and the host organization signing a Study Contract, which establishes the study plan to be carried out at the host institution and which will be recognized at the home institution;

Recipients

Students in the 4th and 5th years of the Integrated Master's Degree in Medicine (MMED) regularly enrolled at FMUP during the application's formalization and mobility implementation.

Access to Funding and Duration of the Mobility Period

This program has no support funding available for students interested in undertaking a period of mobility in national higher education institutions.

As with other mobility programs, within the scope of the Almeida Garrett program, students must pay tuition fees at their home institution and are exempt from the payment at the destination institution during the mobility semester.

The mobility period for studies at a partner university should last a maximum of one semester.

Application Process

1. Pre-Application Process

The pre-application process aims to determine which students meet the eligibility conditions and fulfill the selection criteria defined each year for a mobility period in the following academic year.

Study and internship places are protocolled, i.e., guaranteed by agreement between the FMUP and the host national higher education institution.

Stage 1: Gathering information from the student


• Participation in information sessions organized by the Academic Mobility Centre of the Academic Management Unit (NMA-UGA) of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, which will be announced in due course;
• Consultation of the Calendar of application activities for the mobility programs for the academic year in question
• Consultation of the Lists of Available Internships (protocol vacancies) and Lists of Available Studies vacancies made available by the NMA-UGA;
• Consultation of host institutions' websites;
• Consultation of Pre-application Call for mobility programs in the Study and Internship types ;
• Consultation of the Regulations for outgoing student mobility (U. Porto) transcription of records: conversion of host university grades to the 10-20 numerical scale
• Consultation of the Application rules applicable to U. Porto (UP) student mobility .

Stage 2: Pre-Application Process


• Pre-application for the Almeida Garrett programme begins with a call for applications, which sets out the period for candidates to apply, defining the deadline and application rules.
• This pre-application, whether for studies or internships, is made by sending an e-mail to mobilidade@med.up.pt, expressing preferences for the existing vacancy options – published in the Lists of Available Internship Vacancies (registered vacancies) and Lists of Available Study Vacancies .

2. Making an Application

Once selected, the student must:


• Check with the Academic Mobility Centre the compatibility of the study plan or internships and the semester (Host Institution and FMUP);
• Complete and submit the online application form on the SIGARRA information system;
• Upload the following documents:
  • Citizen's card (where the tax number is visible);
  • Proof of IBAN;
  • Valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), or proof of application for renewal; or Health Insurance, in the case of non-EU destinations;
  • Valid residence permit (if the student applicant is not European);
  • Power of attorney (available on SIGARRA).
