One of FMUP's internationalization initiatives is formalizing agreements with foreign Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) for co-tutored doctorates. Under these agreements, the student benefits from the possibility of obtaining two diplomas, one from the University of Porto and another from the HEI, where they will carry out part of their studies to complete their degree (or a single diploma, mentioning the two formative universities).
3rd cycle (Doctorate) students at the University of Porto.
To be considered for this program, the doctorate student must spend at least 9 months at one of the two institutions.
There are no direct funding opportunities available for the international co-tutorship program.
The co-tutoring agreement must specify the amount of tuition fees to be paid to each institution, according to the periods of stay at each university and whether (or how) there may be a reduction or waiver of tuition fees corresponding to the period of work completed by the doctoral student at the other institution.
This is a situation in which the doctorate student is simultaneously enrolled at their University of Origin, as well as at another foreign HEI, as a regular doctorate student, going through the respective admission processes in the doctorate programs of each institution, and following the enrollment procedures in each of them.
The student must contact the Director of the Doctorate Program at each institution to determine if they meet the admission requirements, ensuring direct contact with the partner institution to define the final text of the co-tutoring agreement.
FMUP’s support services for this process are the Postgraduate Education and Academic Mobility Offices, in conjunction with the Rector’s Office of the University of Porto.
