Erasmus+ Staff Mobility

Erasmus+ Staff is one of the action lines of the Erasmus+ Program within the scope of mobility in education. It offers U. Porto teachers, technicians, and researchers the chance to spend a period of mobility abroad on teaching assignments (Short Teaching Assignment - STA) and/or training assignments (Staff Mobility for Training - STT) at partner Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and other eligible organizations in the Program countries.

At the end of the mobility period, the U. Porto teacher, technician, or researcher receives certificates from the host institution confirming that they have attended and completed the teaching or training assignment in question.

What is it?

  • It is individual mobility, as provided in the Erasmus+ Program Guide
  • Regulated by U. Porto: "Application rules applicable to the 2nd call for the mobility of U. Porto staff for teaching and/or training missions within the European Union - Academic Year 2024/2025"
  • It involves the teacher, technician or researcher, the home HEI, and the host organization signing a Staff Mobility for Teaching/Training - Mobility Agreement, which sets out the plan of activities to be carried out at the host institution and which will be recognized at the home institution;
  • The applicant chooses the type of application (Teaching or Training) at the start of filling in the Application Form. This choice depends on the mobility activity: all staff can access a mobility application for training (teachers included); for teaching mobility, the candidate must be teaching at the Home Institution. In the Staff Mobility for Teaching application, the applicant must present the existing mobility agreement between the two institutions in question, the home institution and the host institution.

Recipients

Teachers, Technicians, or Researchers who have a contractual relationship with the U. Porto in the academic year they are applying and during the mobility period.

Regarding teaching mobilities (STA), the teacher must have a contractual relationship with the U. Porto that expressly includes teaching activities.

Access to funding and length of mobility period

Mobility for teaching (STA) or training (STT) purposes is eligible for funding from the Erasmus+ National Agency, according to the following parameters:

  1. A minimum of 8 teaching hours per teaching assignment;
  2. A minimum of 2 working days per training and teaching assignment (translated into hours, this corresponds to around 16 hours).

UP determines the maximum mobility duration of teachers, technicians, and researchers as five working days and two traveling days, subject to financial availability.

Financial management and funding contracts are handled by the International Relations Service (SRI) of the Rectorate of the University of Porto. Students will only be contacted by the University once their application has been submitted on SIGARRA and subsequently validated by FMUP and UP.

Application Process

It is up to the applicant to formalize the application proposal:

  • Consult the Erasmus+ Program Guide , available online;
  • Consult the Application Rules applicable to the mobility of U. Porto (UP) Staff
  • Gathering all the information and documents necessary for the application: establishing contact with the chosen host institution, proposing the mobility, work plan, foreseeable dates, and requesting a positive response:
    • For training mobilities, an email from a person in charge;
    • For teaching mobilities, an invitation letter specifying the teaching topics and periods;
  • It is vital to draw up a consistent and viable work plan for mobility;
  • Request the support of the Mobility Program Technicians in each Organic Unit (OU) to obtain relevant documentation/information for applying;
  • Complete and submit the online Application Form by the deadline set for each of the publicized calls;
  • Applications are processed at the UP level after an initial check by the OU. The results, with possible allocation of funding, are communicated to applicants by the UP on a case-by-case basis.

Short-term Erasmus+

The Erasmus+ Short Mobility programs - short-term mobility for the 3rd cycle (PhD)/PhD Short Mobility and the Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) - aim to enable students to undertake short training related to their field of study or research. These mobilities are recorded in a Supplement to the Diploma, and, in some cases, the training organization awards a certificate of participation and/or completion.

Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP)

This is a form of the Erasmus+ program. This intensive, interdisciplinary course combines a short-term physical mobility component (5 to 30 days) with a virtual compulsory element (with no time limit), intending to promote innovative teaching and learning methods. BIPs are developed and implemented through a consortium of at least three Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) from at least three EU Member States and/or third countries associated with the Erasmus+ Program. Projects within this type of program are publicized through information provided by the NMA-UGA, teachers, research staff, and the Communication Management Unit at the FMUP and dissemination from the U. Porto. Training courses carried out in this type of mobility may eventually award ECTS credits to students, Supplement to the Diploma and/or certificates of participation and/or completion by the organizing body.

What is it?

Recipients

Students from any of the existing study cycles - 1st cycle, 1/2 (integrated master's), 2nd cycle (master's), or 3rd cycle (doctorate) - who are regularly enrolled at FMUP during the formalization of the application and the mobility period.

Teachers, Technicians, or Researchers (Staff) who have a contractual relationship with the U. Porto in the academic year they apply and during the mobility period.

Access to funding and duration of the mobility period

For this type of mobility, Erasmus+ funding considers the number of days of face-to-face training attended by the applicant plus two days of traveling. Mobility is only valid if the applicant has at least five days of face-to-face mobility.

Financial management and funding contracts are handled by the International Relations Service (SRI) of the Rectory of the University of Porto. Students will only be contacted by the University once their application has been submitted online and subsequently validated by FMUP and UP.

  • The candidate consults information on existing BIPs, including topics, course periods, and certification processes;
  • Making contact with the coordinating and host institution, obtaining a positive response regarding enrolment in the BIP and participation, both virtual and face-to-face.

Step 2: Contact the Academic Mobility Centre (NMA-UGA)
  • Request an appointment to obtain procedural support for the development of the application documents.
