Teaching language
Suitable for English-speaking students
Objectives
The general objective of the discipline is the qualification of the student with the theory and the minimal practical skills in Obstetrics and Gynecology, necessary for the clinical clerkship of the 6th year of the medical course, for the continuing medical education and for the development of interest on research.
Learning outcomes and competences
Learning and competence in the elaboration of clinical histories, physical examination in Gynecology and Obstetrics, family planning, basic management of labour, screening diagnosis and treatment of the most common Gynecologic and Obstetric pathologies
Working method
Presencial
Program
In the knowledge domain:learning of the theory of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In the skills domain: development of self-learning capabilities and the qualification for the obstetric and gynaecologic physical exam in simulators, for the interpretation of ancillary diagnostic tests, such as ultrassonography, hysterosalpingography, hysteroscopy, colposcopy and cardiotocography, and for the elaboration of clinical histories. In the attitudes domain: development of a sense of holistic vision of the patient, of respect for all stages of human life, namely during the pre and post natal periods, of acknowledgment of the importance and rules of professionalism, team work and respect for the scientific and cultural diversity of colleagues and patients.
Mandatory literature

Teaching methods and learning activities
In the first weeks, theoretical sessions and teaching and learning with simulators and patients, with formative assessment. In the last weeks teaching and learning with patients at the hospital services. In the last week, the final assessment is performed.

Eligibility for exams
Contínuous simulation assessment: at least 50% of the maximum classification of 1 point.
Contínuous clinical assessment with completion of a log-book, including the elaboration and discussion of a clinical history and the assessment of professional behaviour. : at least 50% of the maximum classification of 1 point.
In case of absence from the continuous simulation assessment (simulation class),
attendance at the Curricular Unit requires the student to participate in the free
simulation class, with a signature on the attendance sheet available at the
Simulation Center. Although the classification of the continuous simulation
assessment (1 point) is only obtained by participating in the simulation class.
Justification of absences and respective replacement during block attendance must
be made at the Academic Management Unit, which, upon validating the request, will
contact the UC Management. The student must simultaneously inform the
representative of the Course Committee of the submission of the request for
justification of absence in the aforementioned Unit, who, in turn, must inform the
Management / UC Secretariat.
Calculation formula of final grade
The final classification (FC) is calculated as, in a 0 to 20 scale: Presentation of problem based cases/tests (1 point) + Continuous simulation assessment (1 point)+Final simulation assessment (2 points)+Video assessment (1 point)+Continuous clinical assessment (1 point)+Presentation of short clinical case reports (2 points)+Final theoretical test (12 points=40x0,25+2).
Regarding the Final Theoretical Assessment Classification:
If the student is present at the Pathological Anatomy Seminar, the questions in
this topic will be classified as correct, even if not answered or answered
incorrectly.
In conclusion, if the student has not attended the Pathological Anatomy seminar,
to obtain the maximum grade they will have to answer the respective questions
correctly in the theoretical exam. The same applies in case of absence from the
Seminar, validated by the Academic Management Unit. In other words, in the case
of a duly justified absence, the student will only obtain the maximum grade if
they answer the respective questions correctly.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
All the students, including those with special statute, will have to be present in at least 50% of the presential tasks (simulation and clinical rotations), as to get frequency, which is mandatory to pass the curricular unit. All the students, including those with a special statute, will be evaluated in the same way, that is, by doing a final test and by doing practical evaluations, with simulators, videos, and clinical presentations, in seminars and clinical meetings. The dates of the obligatory presences in simulation and clinical rotaions, as well as the dates of the evaluations, may have to be adjusted, following the law and regulations, when it will be impossible to do so with thenormal schedulling.
Classification improvement
The classification of each non-continuous assessment module and the final simulation assessment may be improved at the appropriate epoch for classification improvement after submission of an appropriate application. For more details, please contact the Coordinator of the Curricular Unit.
