Objectives
This course unit aims to provide students with knowledge and skills on the etiology, pathophysiology, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of the most frequent or relevant respiratory and thoracic pathologies. Therefore, students should develop the essential skills and competencies to provide patients with the correct treatment.
In order to provide the aforementioned skills, specialists in areas such as Pulmonology, Thoracic surgery, Clinical pharmacology, Radiology and Pathology will be part of the teaching staff of the course, being an integrated medical-surgical, therapeutic, pathological and imagiological approach also applied.
Learning outcomes and competences
The syllabus includes all the clinical entities that a general practitioner should be acquired with. It also encompasses an approach that provides students with essencial competencies and skills to deliver an appropriate treatment to the patient.

Pathophisiology, semiology,prevention, diagnosis treatment medical and srugical) and prognosis of thoracic and pulmonary diseases. In more detail, the syllabus will be based on the following themes:
Psycical examination and clinical history in Pulmonology and Thoracic surgery; Pulmonary function testing; Bronchology; Noninvasive ventilation; Diagnostic invasive procedures; Tuberculosis; Asthma and COPD; Infection of airways; Lung Cancer; Pleural diseases;Cystic fibrosis; Diffuse pulmonary diseases; Respiratory

Teaching methods and learning activities
The teching methodologies of this course unit will be based on theoretical classes (20 hours), seminars with the discussion of clinical cases (12 hours), practical classes (20 hours), group work and tutorials. There will be a total amount of 57 hours of contact with the students, including evaluation (2 hours).
The final grade will be based on a practical and a theoretic conponent. The practical component, which is worth 50% to the final grade, will be based on continuous assessment and practical exam. The theoretic component will be based on a multiple-choice exam, which is worth 50% of the final grade.

Eligibility for exams
Students will attend, at least, 2/3 of the practical classes and 2/3 of the seminars.
Calculation formula of final grade
0,6McE + 0,3PE + 0,1CA = Final assessment
McE - Multle-choice Exam
PE - Practical exam
CA - Continuous assessment
The addiction of the marks of practical examination, multiple-choice exame and continuous assessment, will be, at least 10 (9,50 before adjustment).
The students must get 10 at each component of the evaluation.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
Students covered by the Special Statutes are given a practical exam extended to some aspects of continuous assessment.
The final classification will be:
0,5MsE+ 0,5PE = Final Assement
Classification improvement
There is only possibility of improving the grade in the multiple choice theoretical exam.
