Objectives

The main objectives of the proposed curricular unit are the teaching of Medical Microbiology. We consider fundamental to promote the development of new mental structures, capacities and new attitudes  so the students can analyse and solve problems.

Learning outcomes and competences

Different competencies should be acquired by the medical students:

Basic competencies: learn how to learn, to know;

Transversal competencies: learn how to cooperate, to behave;

Specific competencies: learn how to do/specific objectives:
- recognize the importance of sampling conditions as part of ensuring the quality and accuracy of results. - to know how to select microbiological tests within the clinical context.
- to know how to interpret the results of microbiological tests and to integrate results with clinical data.
develop clinical diagnostic hypothesis, integrating laboratory data with clinical data.

Working method

Program

Mycology - Pathogenic actions of the main fungal pathogens of man; emerging mycosis.

Parasitology - Pathogenic actions of the main protozoa and metazoa parasites of man.

Virology - Pathogenic actions of the main viral pathogens of man.

Prions

One Health Concept

Clinical Microbiology: introduction to the  diagnostic strategy of the main infectious human syndromes

Mandatory literature

Teaching methods and learning activities

Lectures, two per week, lasting 60 minutes, will be aimed at all students. Depending on the topic addressed, they will often take on the characteristics of a seminar. Laboratorial sessions, one per week, lasting 120 minutes, will be directed to a group of students and supervised by a teacher; are intended to familiarize students with the methods, techniques and diagnostic strategies of Medical Microbiology. Subjects will often be discussed that, given their theoretical and practical nature, will not be covered in formal lectures.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Exame 90,00
Teste 10,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Frequência das aulas 47,00
Estudo autónomo 88,00
Total: 135,00

Eligibility for exams

Obtaining frequency in the curricular unit is subject to the student's presence in 75% of the total number of practical classes. The frequency obtained exempts the student who has passed the year without approval in Medical Microbiology I from the obligation to attend laboratorial sessions, in the two academic years immediately following the one in which he obtained it. Students who have not carried over from 3rd year lose frequency.

Calculation formula of final grade

Distribution assessment with final exam.

Mid-term exams: 2 written exams; multiple choice questions; full marks 1.0, each exam.

Final exam: written examination, including two parts: multiple choice questions and/or questions involving T (true) or F (false) statements and another with several types of problems; full marks 18.0; minimum marks 8.50.

Final Grade: sum of mid-term exam grades + final exam grade.
