Objectives

Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:

- To provide knowledge and practical training that enables the ability to intervene in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of stroke and related diseases

- To provide practical training in the assessment of patients, application of clinical scales and rational discussion of the best clinical guidance for specific cases

- Practical application of updated international Recommendations ("guidelines")

- Acquisition of the notion of multidisciplinarity and the need for a chain-based approach to stroke patients, focusing on the Stroke Code

- To recognize a stroke in an emergency context and its differential diagnoses

- To contact with the complementary investigation adapted to each case, and with the interpretation of parenchymal and vascular imaging

- To contact with emerging interventions, namely arterial recanalization by thrombolysis, intervention neuroradiology, neurosurgery, neuromonitoring and rehabilitation approaches

Learning outcomes and competences

The curricular unit will have the participation of 8 professors, to allow a range of exposure of the student to different care contexts related to the stroke patient.

The learning objectives described can materialize through the syllabus, through the training provided by participation in the management of the clinical case in the Emergency Department, during the complementary neuroradiological and vascular examinations, during the various therapeutic interventions listed, during hospitalization and in the outpatient clinic.

The student will be integrated in the team, participating in the assessment of patients, application of clinical scales and rational discussion of the best clinical orientation of specific cases, namely in accordance with the updated international Recommendations ("guidelines"), which will be provided to the student.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Review of the 4th year CU Neurology and Neurosurgery classes on cerebrovascular disease.

Program

1- Training in the evaluation of the patient with suspected stroke in the Emergency Department, and in the rapid decisions of the Stroke Code; application of the NIHSS neurological deficit scale.

2- Critical evaluation with the neurologist of the various diagnostic interventions - cerebral CT scan, cervical and transcranial Duplex scan, echocardiogram, etc.

3- Monitoring the patient in the various therapeutic interventions - intravenous thrombolysis, endovascular mechanical thrombectomy, neurosurgical intervention, neuromonitoring in Neurocritical care or Stroke Unit, and in rehabilitation strategies.

4- Participation in the clinical case orientation plan during hospitalization and discharge, according to national and international guidelines; participation in a case discussion meeting.

5- Evaluation in outpatient clinic of compliance with secondary prevention measures, and of any complications; application of the modified Rankin disability scale
