Objectives

Clinical training and practical application of acquired knowledge, contributing to vertical teaching, comprising semiology, pre-operative preparation, surgical therapy and post-operative follow-up in the most frequent occurrences in Oesophagogastroduodenal Surgery.

Learning outcomes and competences

Over the course of this unit, the student should become capable of:

1.Acquiring confidence in collecting clinical data, clinical exploring, physical examination, requesting complementary exams and elaborating therapeutic proposals;

2.Acquiring additional knowledge, both in the theoretical field, and in that of the required attitudes for the direct practice of medicine (i.e. for patient contact and investigating/treating their disease);

3.Understanding clinical implications of EGD surgery, as well as the advantages of an early treatment and therapeutic orientation of these patients;

4.Accompanying the patients in their appointments and understanding the advantages of a multidisciplinary approach and of the integration of the various specialties involved in treating these patients;

5.Understanding the complexity of the surgical treatment of these patients, aspects of their postoperative period and potential complications;

6.Understanding and performing the follow-up.
