Objectives

The Cardiology curricular unit aims to develop clinical abilities for the diagnostic and treatment of the most prevalent cardiac diseases in the sportive population. The main topics that will be addressed are: electrocardiography – main principles, criteria and mini-course; the normal ECG and the most frequent variants in young people and athletes – common (benign) and uncommon (abnormal) patterns; ECG interpretation; genetic testing in cardiology; imagiology; syncope; echography in sports medicine; genetics and cardiovascular diseases; importance of medical counseling; sudden death during sport activity; stress test and Holter; contraindications of sport practice.

Learning outcomes and competences

O aluno deverá ser capaz de:

• Conhecer as principais doenças cardiovasculares e a elegibilidade das mesmas para a prática desportiva
• Conhecer as principais contraindicações cardiovasculares à prática desportiva
• Conhecer as características do coração de atleta
• Conhecer as patologias que podem provocar morte súbita e a estratégia para a sua redução
• Ser capaz de identificar os sons cardíacos normais e patológicos
• Ser capaz de fazer a leitura de um ECG e identificar as anomalias no atleta que obrigam à intervenção do cardiologista

Teaching methods and learning activities

Teaching methodologies include theoretical, theoretical-practical and practical teaching. It will be used, as pedagogical resources, individual and group work, questionnaires, discussion forums participation, scientific articles and clinical cases presentation and discussion, online mini-courses, videos analysis, role-playing simulation of clinical interaction situations, visits to professional real context and clinical appointments observation. Curricular unit final evaluation will be made by online tests available through the Moodle platform.
