- Learning to evaluate and interpret the functions of the nervous system (NS) in order to, with data from the history and clinical examination, determine the neurological syndrome, propose diagnostic hypotheses, determine which complementary exams are appropriate for clarification, based on knowledge of the most frequent NS and muscle diseases in the general population.
- Theoretical knowledge and assessment at the patient's bedside, whenever possible, of the following topics:
- Skills in the clinical evaluation of patients with Neurological Diseases, namely in the performance and interpretation of the Neurological Examination.
- Ability to, based on clinical assessment, determine the Neurological Syndrome and propose an etiology.
- Choose which ancillary exams are capable of confirming the proposal, particularly imaging and neuropathology.
- Knowledge about the clinical characteristics of the most frequent diseases and their treatment.
Neuroanatomy, Physiology, Medical Propedeutics
Pharmacology and Therapeutics
Neuroimaging
- Neuroanatomical and physiology review of the nervous system
- Clinical evaluation in the Ward, Outpatient Clinic and Emergency Department.
- Learning the clinical history and technique of the Neurological Examination; contact with some of the complementary diagnostic techniques in neurological pathology, as well as with some therapeutic techniques.
- Learning of neurological syndromes
- Epilepsies - Clinic and treatment
- Dementia - clinical, neuropathological characterization and treatment
- Cerebrovascular Diseases - clinic and standards of action
- Headache - main clinical conditions and treatment
- Movement Disorders - clinical features and treatment.
- Vertigo, Syncope and Coma - clinical features and treatment
- Neuromuscular diseases - clinical and neuropathological diagnosis, and treatment
- Demyelinating and Inflammatory Diseases of the CNS - clinical features and treatment
- Functional Neurological Disorder - clinical features and treatment
- Diseases of the spine and their contente - diagnosis and treatment.
- Traumatic brain injuries – standards of action
- Brain tumors - diagnosis, therapeutic possibilities and prognosis.
- Emergencies in Neurology and Neurosurgery;
- Complementary diagnostic tests, namely the integration of imaging studies with the clinical aspects of clinical neurosciences.
Mandatory literature
Michael Aminoff, David; Greenberg, Roger Simon; Clinical Neurology, Lange, 2018. ISBN: ISBN: 9781259861734.
Complementary Bibliography
Elan Louis, Stephan A. Mayer, Lewis P. Rowland; Merritt's Neurology, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2016. ISBN: ISBN: 9780781791861- Asynchronous theoretical classes, on the Moodle platform, for all students, lasting about 60 minutes, in which the most important aspects of clinical assessment and the clinical characteristics of each group of diseases will be provided.
- Seminars for approximately 30-35 students, lasting 90 minutes, based on real clinical cases, with interactive discussion.
- Practical sessions of 90 to 120 minutes each, with the observation of patients in Inpatient, Outpatient, Emergency, or other clinical/technical activities, by groups of approximately 4 students, with discussion with the respective Professor.
- Simulation classes about traumatic brain injury and the stroke code, in small groups, with training of students in the approach and orientation of these urgent situations
Each student will have a notebook where their teaching activity will be recorded.

Obtaining attendance According to the Institution's rules (minimum number of attendance of 75%, either in the seminars or in the practical sessions)
Final ranking calculation formula
- Distributed evaluation:
- Attendance/punctuality, attitudes, interest, motivation
- Level and integration of knowledge
- Gesture sheet - execution and discussion
Approval in the Curricular Unit implies a classification above 50% in each of the three assessment components
For students with special status who have difficulty attending practical classes and seminars, we will seek to promote flexibility to supplement this attendance in other classes throughout the semester, or by seeking to accompany teachers in clinical tasks at additional times.
If there is no frequency that allows a grade >=50% in the continuous assessment, an examination with the patient may be carried out at the end of the semester, to collect a history and neurological examination, description of the identified pathology and clinical guidance, with the teacher being able to supplement with theoretical- practices.
The practical exam (Gesture sheet – execution and discussion) and the written theoretical test will continue.
