Objectives

- Learning to evaluate and interpret the functions of the nervous system (NS) in order to, with data from the history and clinical examination, determine the neurological syndrome, propose diagnostic hypotheses, determine which complementary exams are appropriate for clarification, based on knowledge of the most frequent NS and muscle diseases in the general population.

- Theoretical knowledge and assessment at the patient's bedside, whenever possible, of the following topics:

  • Neurological examination;
  • Neurological syndromes;
  • Epilepsy;
  • Dementias;
  • Cerebrovascular diseases;
  • Headaches;
  • Movement diseases;
  • Vertigo, syncope and coma
  • Neuromuscular diseases;
  • Inflammatory and demyelinating diseases of the nervous system;
  • Functional neurological disorder
  • Diseases of the spine and its contents;
  • Traumatic brain injuries;
  • Central nervous system tumors;
  • Emergencies in Neurology and Neurosurgery;
  • Ancillary exams for diagnosis;

Learning outcomes and competences

Learning outcomes and skills

- Skills in the clinical evaluation of patients with Neurological Diseases, namely in the performance and interpretation of the Neurological Examination.

- Ability to, based on clinical assessment, determine the Neurological Syndrome and propose an etiology.

- Choose which ancillary exams are capable of confirming the proposal, particularly imaging and neuropathology.

- Knowledge about the clinical characteristics of the most frequent diseases and their treatment.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Teaching methods and learning activities

- Asynchronous theoretical classes, on the Moodle platform, for all students, lasting about 60 minutes, in which the most important aspects of clinical assessment and the clinical characteristics of each group of diseases will be provided.

- Seminars for approximately 30-35 students, lasting 90 minutes, based on real clinical cases, with interactive discussion.

- Practical sessions of 90 to 120 minutes each, with the observation of patients in Inpatient, Outpatient, Emergency, or other clinical/technical activities, by groups of approximately 4 students, with discussion with the respective Professor.

- Simulation classes about traumatic brain injury and the stroke code, in small groups, with training of students in the approach and orientation of these urgent situations

Each student will have a notebook where their teaching activity will be recorded.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Participação presencial 22,50
Exame 17,50
Teste 60,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Estudo autónomo 101,50
Frequência das aulas 60,50
Total: 162,00

Eligibility for exams

Obtaining attendance According to the Institution's rules (minimum number of attendance of 75%, either in the seminars or in the practical sessions)

Calculation formula of final grade

Final ranking calculation formula

- Distributed evaluation:

  • Continuous assessment - 22.5

- Attendance/punctuality, attitudes, interest, motivation

- Level and integration of knowledge

  • Practical exam - 17.5

- Gesture sheet - execution and discussion

  • Final theoretical exam - 60

Approval in the Curricular Unit implies a classification above 50% in each of the three assessment components

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

For students with special status who have difficulty attending practical classes and seminars, we will seek to promote flexibility to supplement this attendance in other classes throughout the semester, or by seeking to accompany teachers in clinical tasks at additional times.
If there is no frequency that allows a grade >=50% in the continuous assessment, an examination with the patient may be carried out at the end of the semester, to collect a history and neurological examination, description of the identified pathology and clinical guidance, with the teacher being able to supplement with theoretical- practices.
The practical exam (Gesture sheet – execution and discussion) and the written theoretical test will continue.
