Objectives
Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:
The optional curricular unit Biomaterials in Medicine: from the product to the patient aims to provide a multidisciplinary knowledge of future doctors in the field of biomaterials and their varied applications in Medicine.
At the end of the UC the student will be able to:
• recognize the importance of biomaterials in Medicine
• acquire knowledge of technological advances in the manufacture of biomaterials
• acquire knowledge regarding the epidemiology, epidemiology and diagnosis of infections associated with biomaterials
• recognize biomaterial benefits and limitations that may influence its performance in practical practice
• Develop an experimental study to evaluate the performance of biomaterials
• Evaluate the characteristics of new state-of-the-art evaluation materials

Learning outcomes and competences
The content covers major and current clinical topics in the field of medical implants, their manufacture, testing and applicability in clinical practice. The combination of different pedagogical modalities with a teaching team with multidisciplinary skills, will allow students to experience 3D printing in the manufacture of biomaterials, laboratory experimentation and discussion of clinical cases. With the accomplishment of the activities in the program, it will be expected that the students acquire the competences in this UC.

Teaching methods and learning activities
The involvement of students in UC activities will allow a transversal knowledge in the science of biomaterials and their usefulness in Medicine, providing a link between Health Sciences and Engineering. The strategy outlined by the faculty will boost the development of critical and scientific thinking by students, placing them in the face of challenges arising from clinical practice.
This curricular unit, with 2 ECTS, provides for 54 hours of total work and will be taught in a block with 19 hours of contact distributed between lectures, seminars, tutorial guidance and laboratory practices. In this last modality, it may be necessary to create shifts since the capacity of the laboratories is limited. The UC will take place in the 2nd semester of the 5th year of the Integrated Master in Medicine and will last for 12 weeks.
Lecturess (8 hours) and seminars (3 hours) will be supported by slides in PowerPoint format, which will be available on FMUP's Sigarra and Moodle platforms. Discussion will be promoted, involving the presentation, for 10 minutes of examples by the students, based on bibliographic research regarding the UC.
The theoretical-practical class (2 hours) will take place at the Institute of Science and Innovation in Engineering (INEGI), where students will be able to experience the methods of manufacturing biomaterials, namely 3D printing.
The practical classes (4h) are a complement to the theoretical classes, allowing students to have direct contact with the laboratory methods used in Microbiology, regarding the testing of biomaterials. They may also participate in some laboratory activities resulting from research projects in biomaterials.
This UC provides 2 hours of tutorial guidance, to prepare students for the presentation and final discussion, which will be the object of evaluation.
All classes will be taught in person, and this modality can be changed due to the epidemiological evolution of COVID19.

Calculation formula of final grade
Final classification calculation formula
Final classification = (PP*0.5) + (TE*0.5)
On what:
PP – face-to-face participation
TE - assessment obtained in the oral work
Continuous assessment during contact hours by the respective professors, weighted by 50% in the final classification and distributed as follows: 0.1*participation and scientific interest + 0.1*commitment and initiative + 0.2*understanding of the methodology practiced + 0.1*attendance.
Oral presentation of 10 minutes and discussion of a scientific article within the scope of the objectives of the curricular unit weighted by 50% in the final classification.
