Objectives

-Indicate the cellular characteristics of the neoplastic cells

- Describe the cellular characteristics of the neoplastic cells

- Identify appropriate methodologies for the study of the various cellular characteristics

- Explain the theoretical basis of the  methodologies

- Experiment techniques for the evaluation of neoplastic cells characteristics

- Distinguish the limitations of the various methodologies

- Explain the various cellular and animal models for cancer research

- Identify the limitations of the various cellular and animal models for cancer research

- Planning experimental approaches to the study of a certain cellular characteristic

- Interpret results obtained in the various experimental approaches

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the UC students should be empowered with tools for description and analysis suitable for both, the understanding of laboratory practices in the areas of basic and translational research in oncology and the development of their research projects.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Completed attendance of the CU of the 1st semester of the 2nd year of MIMED in which the contents of cell cycle and apoptosis are taught

Program

  2.        Proliferation and apoptosis in cancer

  3.        Genetic susceptibility and instability in cancer

  4.        Infection in cancer

  5.        Cellular metabolism in cancer

  6. Experimental models in cancer research

Mandatory literature

Hanahan D, Weinberg RA; Hallmarks of cancer

Complementary Bibliography

Teaching methods and learning activities

Five sessions, 3,5 hours each, including a short theoretical introduction(30 mn), laboratorial practice (3h)

The sessions will be organized to focus on the practical component. A short theoretical introduction attempts to fit the contents of the session on the problems of research or diagnostic pathology. The starting point for the laboratory activities will be information obtained from specific research projects ongoing in the lab or, preferably, projects in which students are involved (eg work of the integrated master's thesis).

Priority will be given to practical methods, active and demonstrative, which will be complemented by short moments of expository presentation and discussion of theoretical and methodological concepts.

Each session will end with a short discussion of the methodological approaches experienced, discussion of the results, applications, limitations and possible artifacts.

Note - in view of the current contingency situation, there may be a need
to adapt some of the contents of the UC, namely the conversion of some
practical classes into theoretical-practical classes. There may also be
recourse to recorded or synchronized classes by ZOOM
