Objectives

The unit aims to

- provide systematic knowledge on the History of Medicine, in order to arouse the student’s continued interest in the subject as well as to be a tool for interdisciplinary research;

- raise the student’s awareness regarding medical museology;

- teach the history of medical artefacts.

- promote the FMUP’s heritage, in order to raise awareness and provide the scholarly means for its safeguard and its pedagogical and scientific use;

- develop the student’s motivation to apprehend and feel cultural values through self training;

- encourage the development of thinking about Medicine.

Learning outcomes and competences

On completion of this unit successful students will have acquired the knowledge on the evolution of the History of Medicine regarding those scientific, technological, technical and social aspects more closely related to the history of the medical armamentarium. They will also be able to identify and characterise them, contribute to the production of new pedagogical contents and preservation.

1. A) Introduction to the documental, material and artistic heritage of the Medical School of the University of Porto ‒ a source of knowledge on national and international medical and historic issues, and the main object of study in the student’s training.

 

1. B) History of Surgical Instruments:

1st Part: General History of Anatomy

2nd Part: General History of Surgery

3rd Part: History of Surgery in Portugal

4th Part: Analysing the Shape of Surgical Instruments

5th Part: Analysing the Materials of Surgical Instruments

6th Part: Manufacture of Surgical Instruments. The Portuguese Example

7th Part: Manufacture of the Surgical Kit

8th Part: Cataloguing Surgical Instruments.

 

1. C) History of the Diagnostic Instruments

1st Part: General History of Medicine. The disease, the patient, the society and the physician. The importance of medical diagnosis.

2nd Part: Introducing diagnostic instruments from different historic periods. 3rd Part: Cataloguing Medical Instruments.

The unit’s contents cover all the most important aspects of the CU’s objectives, namely the history, identification, cataloguing, preservation and safeguard of the medical armamentarium

Teaching methods and learning activities

Varied teaching approaches will encourage the student´s learning and knowledge acquisition through reflexion, discussion and active participation.

1. Theoretical lessons (9 hours).Introduction to the topics, based on the documental and material sources contained in the FMUP.
2. Theoretical/practical lessons (10 hours).Coached by the lecturer, students analyse the collections and documental sources contained in the FMUP’s “Maximiano Lemos”Museum of the History of Medicine. Discussion of specific topics related to the medical armamentarium.

 

Teaching methodologies used encourage learning and the acquisition of knowledge, technical skills and basic competences for the student’s familiarisation with the medical armamentarium, as well as its preservation and safeguard.

Successful completion of the course unit involves 22 hours mandatory attendance to the lessons.

Calculation formula of final grade

Assessment(best score 20):Essay-type written summative examination. Successful completion of the course unit ,and a score of at least 10 in the  written summative examination.
