Objectives

Approach to themes and practical cases that articulate the production of knowledge in the great area of General Surgery with supervised training (practical classes) in addition to theoretical classes, theoretical-practical classes and seminars in the General Surgery Service, aiming to acquire basic knowledge about surgical pathologies more common, in addition to the acquisition of knowledge, skills and attitudes that enable basic clinical performance in General Surgery.
Transmit it to the student, and require them in the future to be guided by the highest standards of quality and the principles of ethics/bioethics, with a view to solving health problems.

Learning outcomes and competences

Develop skills in physical examination and complementary propaedeutics in surgical patients, essential for the exercise of basic and emergency medical acts. Systematize, decide and evaluate the most appropriate actions based on scientific evidence. Favor the doctor-patient relationship; Identify and learn the clinical conditions, anatomical mechanisms, pathophysiology, epidemiological, etiological, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, prognosis and medical and surgical treatment of the main pathologies in the field of General Surgery.

Reinforce and apply the knowledge previously acquired in the 3rd year subjects, particularly in the scope of medical and surgical propaedeutics.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Module teaching (Blocks every 5 weeks) - 2 groups

The teaching methodologies aim to privilege opportunities for learning certain skills such as knowledge, attitudes and skills that enable the student to have a good basic clinical performance in surgery.

- Total contact hours - 76h


- Theoretical classes - 15 classes according to the previously established program. Lessons in the beginning will be recorded and placed in MOODLE

- Seminars (pathological anatomy) - 3 hours - two sessions of 1.5 hours each. Vertical integration with General Surgery (when possible), for 4 groups (37 + 37 + 37 + 37) = semester

Theoretical-practical classes - 7.5 hours - to be taught in 5 weeks regarding digestive and breast pathology

Internships - 50.5 hours

Practical classes will be taught in the General Surgery Service, preferably during hospitalization, that is, in the ward as well as in the External Consultation, Emergency Service, Operating Room and Outpatient Surgery. Students should also participate in Service Meetings, General Surgery/Pathological Anatomy meetings (selected Clinical Cases), group meetings (gastroesophageal, hepatobiliary, colorectal) and oncology/General Surgery meetings (selected cases)
The student must accompany his professor throughout the clinical activity, and for this to agree on the most convenient time for both.
The presentation and delivery of two clinical records (at least) is mandatory, which must be attached to the student's booklet; the final grade of the practical component will be given by the Assistant and the Regent of the Discipline.

Eligibility for exams

Attendance is required to access the final exam. It is mandatory to correctly fill in the student's booklet and deliver two clinical histories made during the valence. Attendance must be at least 75% in seminars and practical classes.

All procedures or acts performed must be initialed on the day they are performed by the respective Assistant or Assistants. It is mandatory to hand in the booklet to the Department of Surgery, Floor 7 (Secretariat) by the last day of the practical class.

Students wishing to improve their grade may apply for the exam in the appeal period.

Calculation formula of final grade

Final exam - written test with true or false answer, which may or may not contain questions related to clinical histories, according to the previously defined subject (see program).

Final rating - 20% AD + 0.8 x T where Ad is distributed assessment.
Written test with 20 groups of questions with 100 statements of choice V or F (penalty for incorrect answer of 0.1 points)
Approval if C ≥ 10 with T ≥ 9 values

Final rating = C for values ​​between 0 and 18; final classification > 18 implies oral examination, available only for C ≥ 19 values.
If oral exam, the final grade of the weighting between C and the classification of the oral exam (no minimum guaranteed).

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Students who have special status and who have not attended practical classes will have to take a practical exam at the end of the school term with a teacher, and for approval will have to have 10 marks in the practical test.
Final classification for students with special status will be 0.2 practical grade + 0.8 theoretical grade.
Oral exam only available for C ≥ 19 points (no minimum guaranteed)
