Objectives

At the end of this course the student should:

Be familiar with the anatomical terminology.

Understand the general organization of the locomotor system.

Understand how the locomotor system works.

Understand the anatomical bases of human posture and locomotion.

Develop observational skills.

Practice the description technique, by using the appropriate terminology.

Acquire a knowledge base that can be used in the interpretation of pathological situations and later applied in other curricular units of the course and in future clinical experience.

Learning outcomes and competences

The syllabus comprises topics that allow students to know the functioning of the locomotor system and the systems that it integrates, and be able to solve morphofunctional problems in selected clinical cases. The teaching methods applied allow the development of critical thinking and the practical application of knowledge, and encourage self-learning.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The teaching of the curricular unit is divided into theoretical classes (20 hours) and practical laboratory classes (65 hours), corresponding to a total of 85 contact hours.

Theoretical classes are intended for the presentation of general themes and for the morphofunctional integration of knowledge acquired in practical classes. The practical classes are intended for the observation of macroscopic material, in cadaveric specimens, made available in advance on the UC e-learning page, and for the discussion of topics that will allow to integrate, in regional terms, anatomical knowledge.

Eligibility for exams

According to the norms from the Pedagogical Council. Students with special regimes will also follow the norms from the Pedagogical Council.

Calculation formula of final grade

DISTRIBUTED EVALUATION

It will be carried out as follows:

  1. Practical part (ADP): Identification of 4 anatomical structures at the end of the classes taking place on Thursday and on Friday, with the duration of 2 minutes. The classification obtained will contribute to 20% of the classification of the practical component of the final exam.

  2. Theoretical part (ADT): Test composed of 4 short-answer questions, lasting 2,5 minutes, held at the end of the practical classes taking place on Thursday and on Friday. The classification obtained will contribute to 20% of the classification of the theoretical component of the final exam.

FINAL EXAM

It will be held on the scheduled date of the exam calendar and consists of a practical test and a theoretical test.

1.   Practical test (P): Consists in the identification of 30 anatomical structures. These will be placed in pairs, with students having 1 minute to identify each set of two structures. The mark of 20 corresponds to the correct identification of 30 structures and the mark of 10 values to the correct identification of 15 structures. Intermediate marks will be calculated in proportion to the number of structures identified correctly. The mark obtained in this test represents 80% of the mark of the practical component of the final exam.
 The mark of the practical component (CP) will be calculated by using the formula:

                                              CP = 0.80 P + 0.20 ∑ADP

Only the students whose CP is equal to or greater than 9.5 will be admitted to the theoretical test.

2.    Theoretical test (T): Consists of 45 questions of open and short answers, each with the same mark. These questions may be divided in a variable number of paragraphs. The mark obtained in this test represents 80% of the mark of the theoretical component of the final exam.
The final theoretical classification (CT) will be calculated using the formula :

                                              CT = 0.80 T + 0.20 ∑ACT

Students whose CT is equal to or greater than 9.5 will be considered as having passed the theoretical exam. Passing the theoretical exam is a necessary condition for calculating the final grade and passing the curricular unit.
The final grade (CF) of the course will be calculated using the formula:

                                              CF = (2CT + 1CP)/3

Students with marks over 17 can make an oral exam to stand up for the mark, being aware that the final mark can maintain the mark but also increase or decrease the mark until 17. If the students in this setting decide not to do the oral exam they will get a final mark of 17.

Important notes:

  1. Students who pass the practical exam (CP) in the normal period, but whose final theoretical classification (CT) is less than 9.5, will not have to repeat the practical exam in the appeal period. If, even so, the students intend to repeat the practical exam in the appeal period, the mark that will be considered for the purposes of calculating the CP will be the one obtained in the appeal test, and that obtained in the normal period will be automatically discarded.

  2. Students who pass the practical exam (CP) in the normal period, but do not attend the theoretical exam, will not have to repeat the practical exam at the time of appeal. If, even so, the students intend to repeat the practical exam in the appeal period, the mark that will be considered for the purposes of calculating the CP will be the one obtained in the appeal test, and that obtained in the normal period will be automatically discarded.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Students with special statutes that condition the waiver of mandatory attendance to classes will have to communicate in writing to the Curricular Unit's regency (to the addresses madeira@med.up.pt and andreiab@med.up.pt ) by the end of the month of September if they intend to carry out the ADP/ADT. The decision is binding and irreversible. If they do not intend to take the ACP/ACT, their CP and CT will only result from the mark obtained in the final exam.

Students who, due to their status and frequency regime, choose to take the final exam in special periods will have to take the practical test and the theoretical test in all the special periods in which they enroll.

Classification improvement

Students who intend to improve their classification at the time of appeal will have to repeat the practical and theoretical tests. For these students, the marks obtained in the distributed evaluation will not be taken into account.

Observations

The teaching and assessment methods may have to be altered if there are significant changes in the epidemiological status.
