Objectives

- Learning the evaluation and interpertation  of Disorders of Nervous System and muscle in order to set the Neurological Syndrome, and with data from medical history to propose a clinical diagnosis and choose apropriate subsidiary exams to set a clinical diagnosis based in the knowledges of  the most frequent disorders of nervous system and muscle.
 - Imaging exams in the diagnosis of Nervous System and paper of Neuropathological Exam, namely in Neuromuscular and Neurodegenerative Disorders .

- Pharmacological treatment of Nervous System Disorders, namely in Epilepsy, Headaches, Dementia and Parkinson Disease:

  • Neurological examination

Learning outcomes and competences

- Be able to evaluate a patient with a neurological disorder, namely to perform and interpret the neurological examination. 

- To be able, based in clinical evaluation, to set the Neurological Syndrome and its aetiology.

- Be able to choose appropriate subsidiary exams necessary to confirm the proposal, namely Image and Neuropathological exams.

- Knowledge on the clinical characteristics of most frequent disorders and pharmacological treatment.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

- Knowledge in Neuroanatomy, Neurophysiology and Genetics.

Program

- Clinical evaluation of neurological patients at bedside at ward, ambulatory and emergency room and clinical application of medical Imaging in Neurosciences (with RIM).

- Dementia - clinical and pathological characterization and pharmacological treatment (with TGPC and with RIM).

- Stroke – clinical aspects and orientation.

- Neuromuscular Disorders – clinical and pathological diagnosis (with APE).

- Epilepsy- clinical aspects and pharmacological treatment (with TGFC).

- Headaches- clinical aspects and pharmacological treatment (with TGFC). 

- Demyelinative and Inflammatory Disorders - clinical aspects and treatment.

- Movement Disorders with special mention of Essential Tremor and Parkinson Disease – clinical characterization and pharmacological treatment.

- Disorders of the Rachis - diagnosis and treatment options.

- Intracranial tumors – diagnosis and treatment options and prognosis.

- Craniocerebral trauma – rules of clinical diagnosis and treatment.

- Neurosurgery in Paediatrics.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Lectures, for all the students,  lasting 50 minutos intended to provide the most relevant aspects in clinical evaluation and clinical characteristics of each group of neurological diseases.

Seminar for almost 30 students, lasting almost 90 minutes with interactive discution with APE, TGFC and RIM of real clinical cases.


Practical sessions.lasting between 90 to 120 minutes in the ward, ambulatory and emergency room with clinical evaluation of patients by about 5 students, with discussion of the clinical case with the teacher.

All the student the learning activity will be registated in the Booklet.
