Objectives
In this unit, it is intended to promote social and human development of future physicians through service learning.
To create a space where the student could contact with the reality of society and interact with different types of people helping to better understand the Human Person.
It is intended that the student understand their role in society and become more socially responsible.
It is hoped through this course to contribute to a medical doctor more humane and attentive to social problems.
Learning outcomes and competences
This unit aims to promote social and human development and, for such, students will carry out volunteer activities in which they will take contact with other realities.
The action or actions developed have a defined purpose and it will be selected by the student. So, student can be responsible for the choice made.
Contacting with distinct realities will become students more aware of the various social and human problems, allowing to know reality that they often ignore.
By requiring at least twenty hours linked to health, it will allow the student to experience the difficulties and feelings that patients suffer, so it is expected to improve a medical-patient approach.
The final report will enable the student to reflect on the work performed and thus integrate the action in its formation. This reflection is very important to distinguish extracurricular voluntary services from a curricular activity where through voluntary actions students may acquire bio-psycho-social skills very important for the medical profession (R.G. Bringle, J.A. Hatcher, Implementing Service Learning in Higher Education, Journal of Higher Education, Vol. 67 (2), 1996).
