Objectives
The objectives of this course are:
To know the organization of Primary Health Care (PHC) in Portugal
To know the profile of the providers practicing in Primary Health Care (general and family medicine and public health doctors, nurses, clinical secretary)
To know the health-related social sector activity
To know the functioning of a Family Health Unit (health center)
Learning outcomes and competences
At the end of this course, the student should be able:
To describe the functioning of Primary Health Care in Portugal, in terms of personalized medicine and population approach
To identify the providers in PHC
To characterize the exercise context and the roles of each professional group

The philosophy and the aim of Primary Health Care.
The physical resources, the professionals involved and the way the Primary Health Care Unit operates in Portugal.
The practice of General and Family Medicine and other professions involved in Primary Health Care as a whole as well as its different aspects, especially its definition, content and nature, methods and techniques, workload, team organization, activity in terms of space and time.
The different organizational models of health in Portugal, as well as their characteristics, advantages and disadvantages.
The institutions of the Portuguese National Health System and Service, as well as other Community institutions that may be related to health in some way in Portugal.
The context of outpatient and hospital exercise.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Theoretical-practical classes: 7 classes, 2-hour each, under the teacher's responsibility, integrating the practical aspects of the professional exercise in the theoretical conceptualization of the topics covered.
Seminars: 5 sessions, lasting 2 hours. Professionals (doctors, nurses, clinical secretaries, managers or others) will be invited to share their insight and experience in their professional activity.
Supervised Experiences: Students will visit a Family Health Unit, contacting professionals at their place of work and learning on site how the unit works.

Eligibility for exams
Presence in at least 75% of academic activities
Proof of active participation in the elaboration of the final work
Calculation formula of final grade
The final classification is calcuylated by weighting:
- Participation in pedagogical activities during the course(20%)
- Elaboration of a written work on one topic of Primary Health Care, to be delivered at the end of the semester (60%)
- Oral presentation of the wtitten work (20%)
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
Students who are absent from physical attendance in academic activities, under the Special Statute, must provide proof of knowledge acquisition by submitting a report that includes the program provided for each session.
Classification improvement
To improve their final classification, the student will have to submit an individual report under the same structure of the group's semester work.
