Objectives

The main objectives of the proposed curricular unit are the teaching of Medical Microbiology. We consider fundamental to promote the development of new mental structures, capacities and new attitudes that may provide students the ability needed to analyze and solve problems.

Learning outcomes and competences

Different competencies should be acquired by the medical students:
Basic competencies: learn how to learn, to know;
Transversal competencies: learn how to cooperate, to behave;
Specific competencies: learn how to do (specific objectives).

 Competences: To understand the basics and diagnostic strategies in Medical Microbiology. To uinderstand microbial virulence attributes and pathogenicity mechanisms. To know how to select and/or to apply correctly the distinct methods of antisepsis and sterilization.

Working method

Presencial

Program

Bacteriology - Morphology and bacterial ultrastructure.

Mycology - Morphology, reproduction, culture and taxonomy of the fungi.

Parasitology - Morphology, life cycle and pathogenic actions of the main protozoa and metazoa parasites of man;

Virology - Physiochemical characteristics and biological study of the viruses. Prions.

Mechanisms of microbial virulence and pathogenicity versus host defenses.

Sterilization and disinfection: laboratorial and clinical application

Microbial pathogenicity mechanisms and host defenses.

Mandatory literature

Teaching methods and learning activities

The previewed formation activities, involving theoretical and practical formation, the active student participation in the solution of case-problems in a tutorial regimen, complemented with individual study will provide medical students a comprehensive perspective of the intricate involvement of medical microbiology in all fields of clinical medicine.

Total  workload:  28 hours direct teaching. (3 ECTS): 16 lectures 1 hour each; 2 seminars 1 hour each; 10 practical sessions 1 hour each.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Exame 90,00
Teste 10,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Estudo autónomo 53,00
Frequência das aulas 28,00
Total: 81,00

Eligibility for exams

Course unit attendance is conditioned to the presence of the student in 75% of the total number of practical classes.
The frequency is valid for two academic years immediately followed the one in which it is obtained, in case the student pass the academic year.

Calculation formula of final grade

Distribution assessment with final exam.

Mid-term exams: 2 written exams; multiple choice questions; full marks 1.0, each exam. Not mandatory

Final exam: written examination, including two parts: multiple choice questions and/or questions involving T (true) or F (false) statements and another with several types of problems; full marks 18.0; minimum marks 8.00.

Final Grade: sum of mid-term exam grades + final exam grade.

Note: The marks obtained in the intermediate evaluations remain valid during the validity of the frequency that was obtained and in the two academic years immediately followed to the one in which it obtained it.
