Objectives

Acquire basic knowledge about: (A) cell cycle regulation, cell division and molecular processes underlying differentiation, dedifferentiation and cellular aging; (B) cytogenetic techniques and basic concepts on structure and function of chromosomes, (C) etiopathogenesis of chromosomal pathology, preparing students to acquire knowledge related to genetic transmission of chromosomal disorders and genetic risk assessment. Additionally it is intended that students be able to critically evaluate scientific literature and apply the basic principles of the scientific research in biology and genetics.

Learning outcomes and competences

The program integrates the fundamental knowledge of cell biology and genetics, to correlate the knowledge with clinical manifestations of genetic disorders namely the chromosomal pathology.

The contents transmitted in lectures and later analyzed and discussed in laboratory sessions allow acquisition of learning objectives.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Lectures (13hours) and laboratory sessions (12 hours).

The practical classes will include microscopic observation and the realization of some major cytogenetic techniques practiced in Genetics Laboratories. It Will allow students a more practical contact with the topics covered in the lectures.

Calculation formula of final grade

Evaluation: Final exam (FE) + pratical teste (PT)

The practical component  will be evaluated by an assessment test that will take place at the end of the practical classes, in a single exam for all students, and no new oportunity will be available.  Failure  this evaluation will imply that the student assigns 0 values from 2 possible values. It was not considered a minimum mark in the practical test but the student should take into account that this evaluation was attributed to the valuation of 1/10 of the final mark.

1. (FE) Final exam  (20 marks):

Part I – 15 marks . It includes 30 multiple-choice questions (each 0.4 marks, quoted to 12 marks) + 20 true-false questions (each 0.15 marks, quoted to 3 marks);

Part II - 5 marks. Short answer questions

2. (PT) Evaluation of practical classes (20 marks) - Evaluation focused in in pratical issues

Final assessmentStudents must reach a minimal classification of 9.5 (out of 20).
