Objectives
This course aims to contact with the practice of Public Health and thus recognize the specificities of this medical speciality, the scope of its intervention, and recognize its relevance in the dialogue with other specialities. This curricular unit complements the curricular course that during the Integrated Master's Degree in Medicine comprised, among others, the theoretical-practical training in Population Health, General Epidemiology, Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
OBJECTIVES OF THE CURRICULAR UNIT
I. To know and better understand how, where and when the public health professionals act, with emphasis on the activity of public health physicians;
II. To know and better understand the practical conditions and processes involved in health planning, evaluation of community interventions, and health authority;
III. To know the main challenges to the practice of public health and to understand how the different organizations (NGOs, Municipalities, Health Unit, etc.) involved in health promotion and disease prevention are integrated;
IV. Diagnose the health problems of a population and its determinants, prioritize health needs, and define the most appropriate strategies to meet these needs, according to the determinants and population where it occurs;
V. Contact with the activities of monitoring and control of communicable diseases and environmental risks;
VI. Contact with health promotion activities through community intervention projects and programs.
Learning outcomes and competences
It is intended that in the end, students will understand the essential aspects of HEALTH PLANNING, including diagnosis, prioritization, selection of strategies and evaluation programs of health promotion, EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SURVEILLANCE of diseases of mandatory notification, surveillance and promotion of ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH, and PROMOTION OF HEALTH in the community.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Having the course 3ECTs, it is estimated a total of 81 hours of student work, of which 30 are contact hours, distributed as follows:
Seminar: 8 hours
Residence Tutorial: 22 hours in Public Health Services
Typical residence training, based on seeing, discussing and doing. The evaluation intends to capture such a hands-on training.
