Objectives

In the nursery,operative theatre, post unit care students learn basic anesthesia skills on routine cases under close faculty supervision.Discuss the impact of a patient’s comorbidities on their suitability, readiness and/or medical optimization for anesthesia and surgery. Preoperative preparation of patient, monitoring en-route to OR. Airway management.Interpersonal and communication skills.

Learning outcomes and competences

It is expected that students are able to observe, describe and develop skills related perioperative medicine: realize an interview and preoperative physical examination -Pre-oxygenation and ventilation with face mask introduction of supraglottic device of 1st and 2nd generation

- to identify the risk associated with the proposed surgical procedure

- knowing how to prescribe adequate medication for pain control and knowing the methods available for postoperative analgesia

- anesthesia and concomitant drug therapy: antihypertensives and antidiabetics

-comprehend perioperative monitoring: standard monitoring of the American Society of Anesthesiologists.

- Transfer of a patient

- Post-anesthetic Care Unit

Monitoring

Treatment of nausea and vomiting

- Evaluation and treatment of postoperative pain: the various therapeutic options, drugs, modes and routes of administration.

- Discharge criteria from the Post Anesthetic Care Unit

Assist perioperative evaluation.

Observe informed consent process.

Demonstrate and routinely practice appropriate universal precautions.

Assist in preoperative preparation of patient including IV placement.

Assist in patient transfer/transport and monitoring en-route to OR.

Preoxygenate patient in preparation for anesthesia induction.

Demonstrate ability to manage the airway of a patient under general anesthesia with bag-mask ventilation, intubation or LMA placement.

Teamwork comunication in the perioperative setting.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The student should closely contact with the role of the anesthesiologist, both inside and outside the operating room . The student should engage in monitoring the patient being encouraged to evaluate the patient in all the perioperative period. The student should be able to do the preoperative evaluation , keep track on the operating room and in the postoperative period at the post –anaesthesia care unit, where should be able to maintain surveillance and recognition of major complications.
