These are essential for adequate exploration and evaluation in Geriatric Psychiatry. The content is covered in a dynamic of exposition, interpretation and analysis of those concepts, in order to acquire meaning, in an integrative perspective in the clinical context, allowing their suitability in therapeutic intervention (pharmacological, psychological and social).

Teaching methods and learning activities

The curricular unit (with 14h of contact), of 7 weeks (semestral) will be taught in the form of seminars and practical classes. The seminars will have expositive, interrogative, demonstrative and active methodology. Conventional, audiovisual and multimedia (e.g. power-point and movies) teaching resources will be used.  Practical classes will be minister in the inpatients settings and consultations, with direct contact with old patients, by tutorial orientation.

Students will be encouraged to use techniques of self-study, through compulsory readings, individual research, preparation and analysis of clinical cases for discussion. For each topic, a specific bibliography will be given and/or support texts beyond the basic bibliography will be provided.

The collaboration of students in ongoing research projects will be especially encouraged, as well as a possible stimulation of integration in these projects when planning the future dissertation.

In addition to the theoretical exposition of the different syllabus contents, with interactive methodologies will be used, involving the students in the learning process. Thus, pedagogical techniques with simulation, demonstration, study of clinical cases, brainstorming and practical exercises, will be used. Therefore, teaching methodologies will be applied in connection with the learning objectives, in order to provide a holistic view of Geriatric Psychiatry, with the appropriate bridge between the theoretical aspects and clinical practice.
