Objectives

The Optional Curricular Unit "Basic Contact in Healthcare" will consist of an area of contact with the hospital external environment, where the student contacts with the patients and their families in their homes and in the Health Centres. Students will develop the following skills: - Knowing the Primary Health Care; - Identify the Portuguese National Health Service, and the institutions of the Community, their functions and skills.

The methodology allows to put into practice the theoretical knowledge acquired.

Knowing the philosophy and goals of the Primary Health Care. Contact the physical space, the professionals involved and the method of operation of health centers in Portugal. Understand the practice of family medicine and other professions involved in Primary Health Care Portuguese as a whole as well as its various components, especially its definition, content and nature, methods and techniques, workload, organization teams, activity in terms of space and time. Knowing the different organizational models of health in Portugal, as well as their characteristics, advantages and disadvantages. Identify the different institutions of the System and the Portuguese National Health Service, as well as other Community institutions that may be somehow related to health in Portugal. Analyze the similarities and differences between Hospitals and Health Centers and Doctors from hospitals, public health and general practice.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Seminars: Together with the Assistant and the other students who work or will work with the same assistant, there will be present and discuss the tasks performed and will discuss topics of Primary Health Care, for a period ofthree hours.

Supervised experiences: The student may, under the guidance of Assistant or other Professional Unit of Primary Health Care, travel to the homes of the users or health institutions or the community in any way connected with health, with a duration of four hours by producing a written report on the same.

Tutorial: During the course of the Curricular Unit the student will contact with organization and planningof a Primary Health Care Setting and / or perform other tasks as may be assigned, for a period of three hours, which will require the realization of a written report.

The final classification is calcuylated by weighting:


  • Participation in pedagogical activities during the course(20%)



  • Elaboration of a written work on one topic of Primary Health Care, to be delivered at the end of the semester (60%)



  • Oral presentation of the wtitten work (20%)
