Objectives

Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:

Prepare the student to solve the most basic problems of a Urogynecology consultation, conveying knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the pelvic floor, the diagnosis and treatment of urogynecologic pathology  and pelvic floor dysfunction, particularly genital prolapse and urinary incontinence.

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit’s intended learning outcomes:

The syllabus of the course was designed to provide the student with the basic knowledge and  enhance their competencies to allow him to advise with confidence patients with urogynecological problems.

Syllabus:

Anatomy and Embryology
Surgical anatomy of the pelvic floor and genitourinary organs.
Physiology and Function of the Pelvic Floor. Physiology and Prolapse of the Pelvic Organs and urinary incontinence
Factors influencing the normal and abnormal function of the pelvic floor and lower urinary tract.
Diagnosis of Pelvic Floor Dysfunction
Clinical history to identify the  severity of pelvic dysfunction. Complete physical  and urogynecological exam. Correlation with the results of ancillary diagnostic tests and formulation of  a treatment plan. Most appropriate and effective ancillary diagnostic techniques: ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, urodynamics, cystoscopy and other diagnostic techniques.
Pelvic Floor Dysfunction and Pelvic Prolapse Organs. Surgical and Non Surgical Treatment
Study of surgical procedures and correction of different types of genital prolapse: anterior compartment prolapse (cystocele and urethrocystocele), middle compartment prolapse (uterine and vaginal vault prolapse), posterior compartment prolapse (rectocele and enterocele).
Study of medical procedures in the management of pelvic organ prolapse.
Prescription and application of behavioral methods of treatment or rehabilitation of the pelvic floor.
Treatment of Urinary Incontinence
Study of surgical correction of stress incontinence and other procedures to restore urinary continence.
Prescription of  pharmacological agents for the treatment of incontinence.
Prescription and application of behavioral methods of treatment or rehabilitation of the pelvic floor.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit’s intended learning outcomes:

The course adopts a "hands on" learning methodology with direct involvement of the students, in groups, in hospital consultations, diagnostic examinations and medical and surgical therapies. Additionally, students receive training through seminars and theoretical-practical classes on relevant topics of urogynecology.

Teaching methodologies (including evaluation):

14 hours of contact distributed throughout 7 weeks: 10 hours in surgery, diagnostic exams, operating room; 2 hours of seminars and 2 hours of theoretical/practical classes.

Evaluation continuous assessment of medical acts: 15 points (out of 20)

Final Mark : Sum of partial marks with a max of 20 points.
