Objectives

To acquire competence (mainly medical attitudes and skills) and basic clinical performance regarding vital support, fluid therapy and wound care in burn patient care.

Learning outcomes and competences

The formation plan, involving and integrated approach of lectures and seminars addressing critical burn care, together with the practical clinical duties along 2 weeks will ensure that students will experience an integrated perspective of the management of the burn patients in a burn unit, acquiring the expected skills and clinical training.

The experience as a member of the medical team of a burn unit, involving medical and surgical care, taken together with a tutorial discussion of results and clinical cases will provide medical students a comprehensive perspective of the intricate medical attitudes required to ensure the rehabilitation of burn patients

Management of burn patients: medical and surgical care.

Etiopathogeny of burn wounds and lesions.

Clinical application of physiologic principles of fluid and electrolyte management, nutrition, metabolism and life support, prevention and treatment of infection, in burn patients.

Surgical Treatments: cleaning, disinfection, fasciotomy, escharotomy, grafts and flaps

Teaching methods and learning activities

Clinical training (predominant), tutorial sessions and seminars. The clinical training takes place at the burn unit, with full integration in the medical staff, tutor/students ratio of 1/1. It also involves the participation in Burn Unit clinical meetings and collaboration in research activities. Clinical training (25h) takes place from 8.00 am to 1.00 pm and is supplemented by seminars (3h), amounting 28h contact hours ( 3 ECTS).

Calculation formula of final grade
