Objectives
This unit aims to empower students with the necessary knowledge and skills: to evaluate the benefits and limitations of the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) to remotely support healthcare delivery; to efficiently use tools for remote access to information and learning; to identify the main technologies used in the remote communication between health information systems; to structure, design and evaluate telemedicine and e-health systems.
Learning outcomes and competences
This unit aims to empower students with the necessary knowledge and skills:
- to evaluate the benefits and limitations of the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) to remotely support healthcare delivery;
- to identify the main technologies used in the remote communication between health information systems;
- to structure, design and evaluate telemedicine and e-health systems.

ICT infrastructures – clinical data warehouses, distributed systems, communication standards, real-time solutions, store & foreward solutions and security systems.
Structuring medical data – data acquisition, the small-window effect, different applications of telemedicine and e-health.
Organizational issues in the use of telemedicine – planning, implementation, setup, maintenance, legal issues and technology assessment, legal cover to telemedicine.
New trends – patient empowerment through e-health, the influence of Web 2.0 in medicine.
Business models applied to telemedicine and e-health.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Theoretical lectures (6T) and theoretical-practical lessons (8TP), with topic discussion, individual and group exercises, and hands-on training on medical scenarios, with proper software.
Evaluation will be based on a project to be presented.The project allows the students to explore the application of new technologies of telemedicine to health topics of the students interest, and have contact to eventual problems that may emerge in the implementation.
