Objectives
This curricular unit aims to develop the theoretical and practical foundations necessary for the interpretation of results, design and implementation of diagnostic studies in clinical research, as questions about the process, tests and technologies applied to diagnosis.
Learning outcomes and competences
At the end of this curricular unit students should be able to: define reproducibility measures and validity of diagnosis studies; discuss the operational characteristics of the diagnosis studies; use measures of validity; design studies for diagnosis tests assessment; critically analyze studies.
Working method
Presencial
Program
Measurement in research and diagnosis in medicine. Definition of reproducibility and validity. Reproducibility measures (agreement proportions, kappa statistics and proportions of specific agreement). Validity measures (sensitivity, specificity, likelihood ratios, probabilities and Bayes’ theorem, predictive values and ROC curves). Multiple tests. Design of studies. Quality of studies and levels of evidences. Validation and cost-benefit. Integration in decision. Screening tests.

Teaching methods and learning activities
After the presentation of each topic there will be time for group discussion and analysis of scientific articles published in the medical literature, as well as resolution of individual exercises. An e-learning platform will be used to deliver class notes and to facilitate the communication between students and teaching staff.
