Objectives


  1. Identification, diagnosis and treatment of the most common conditions observed in an Ophthalmological emergency room

  2. Identification of severe conditions that require referral of these patients

Learning outcomes and competences

The aim of this unit is to give the knowledge’s necessary to the identification of the main causes of eye emergency that come to an ophthalmology unit.

This knowledge’s will train the students to identify the most frequent causes of these conditions and to identify its severity and referral criteria as well as the basic measures that have to be administrated in these situations for a secure procedure and referral.

Ophthalmological emergencies

  1. Differential diagnosis of red eye

1.1 Corneal disease

1.2 Inflammatory and infectious conditions

1.3 Anterior, intermediate and posterior uveitis

1.4 Scleral diseases

1.5 Acute glaucoma

  1. Eye trauma
  2. Eyelids and lacrimal system diseases
  3. Sudden and progressive vision loss
  4. Diagnosis, treatment and referral criteria of the most current ocular emergency conditions

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical-practical lessons (4.5h) and clinical training (21.5h).
