Objectives

1.To understand the normal visual development in childhood and to know the main signs and symptoms for referral to an ophthalmology department.

2.To identify the different pathologies that affects the eye and orbit during the first decade.

3. To be able to diagnose and refer the different ophthalmic pathologies in the paediatric age.

Learning outcomes and competences

The aim of this unit is to give the knowledge’s necessary to the identification of the main causes of ophthalmic pediatric diseases.

This knowledge’s will train the students to identify the main causes of these conditions and to identify its severity and referral criteria.

Pathophysiology of the main ophthalmic diseases in the paediatric age.

Evaluation of visual function in paediatric age.

Refractive changes in childhood.

Strabismus and amblyopia.

Diseases present in paediatric age (epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic work-up, and therapeutics)

Retinopathy of prematurity.

Congenital cataracts

Congenital glaucoma

Ocular malformations

Metabolic diseases and their ocular repercussion

Phacomatoses

Coats Disease

Hereditary diseases in paediatric age.
