Objectives

The main objectives of the proposed curricular unit are to stimulate students interest in scientific research in the field of Medical Microbiology

To promote the development of capacities and attitudes, based upon knowledge acquired in formation activities previewed in the introductory course and in other courses such as Medical Microbiology, Immunology, Pharmacology, among many others, with which the students develop research activities in the field of Medical Microbiology, included in a multidisciplinary research team.

Learning outcomes and competences

The syllabus content and the formation plan covers the most relevant topics needed to undertake the initial steps in research in medical microbiology.

Following the conclusion of the planned activities, in particular the daily living lab experience inserted in a multidisciplinary team, and the lab training, it is previewed by the end of the second week the acquisition of the expected competences; the 2 best students will be invited to join voluntarily the lab research team

Program

This course will enable participants to identify and apply appropriate research methodologies in order to plan, conduct, and evaluate basic research in Medical Microbiology in the above mentioned topics. This course will, furthermore, enable participants to distinguish between scientific method and common sense knowledge, while laying the foundation for research skills at higher levels

At the Department of Microbiology, clinical scientists, molecular biologists, and microbiologists are working together to address key questions about the biology of micro-organisms, how they interact with the environment and how they interact with human hosts to cause infectious disease. The main research interest areas involve:

  1. Health care related infections
  2. Antimicrobial resistance
  3. Natural Alternatives to Antibiotics
  4. Environmental Microbiology, in particular the hospital setting

Mandatory literature

Teaching methods and learning activities

Seminars + laboratorial work group sessions; students will participate actively in ongoing research activities at the Department of Microbiology.

Total workload:  28 hours direct teaching. (3 ECTS): 4 seminars, 1 hour each; 24 hours of practical sessions (8 sessions, 3 hour each).

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Apresentação/discussão de um trabalho científico 50,00
Participação presencial 50,00
Total: 100,00

Calculation formula of final grade

Formative and summative assessment. After qualitative formative assessment (acquired competences, performance, learning motivation) graded as apt, students have to pass a final written examination (public presentation and discussion of a written report); full marks 20.0.
