Objectives

The unit aims to provide practical knowledge - based on theoretical evidence - about the process of diagnosis and intervention in public health, i.e. the organization of the collective response to the problems of health and disease from the population and community perspective (as opposed to activities directed at individuals)

Learning outcomes and competences


Students should know and understand how, where and when the agents of public health act, with emphasis on the work of public health doctors; Know and understand the conditions and practical processes - organizational hierarchy - involved in health planning, evaluation of community interventions and health authority; know the main challenges to public health practice and understand how, at that level, integrate the different structures and organizations involved in the prevention and response to disease. Diagnose health problems of a population and its determinants and to define the necessary interventions.

Program

Accompanying the full range of activities of doctors of Public Health (MSP) in the area of its competence, while they act in public health services at the local and regional levels. Specific themes and Seminars: - Milestones of Public Health; - The professional profile of a MSP; - Introduction to Health Planning; - Major present issues and challenges in  Public Health activity; Major health programs. Epidemiological surveillance, including outbreaks. Field visits.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Having the course 3ECTs, it is estimated a total of 81 hours of student work, of which 30 are contact hours, distributed as follows:
Seminar: 8 hours
Residence Tutorial: 22 hours in Public Health Services
