Objectives

This curricular unit, based on specific skills and / or acquired over the Integrated Master Medicine Course, aim to give specific skills to develop a research project in an interest area. 

 

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Review concepts about science and scientific method
  2. Recognize the main areas of biomedical research
  3. Identify the processes of lab science, clinical and translation
  4. Search for and use scientific information, by using information technology
  5. Collect, process and analyze data
  6. Develop the ability for analysis and synthesis
  7. Develop critical thinking and creativity while approaching the themes
  8. Develop scientific writing skills
  9. Demonstrate effective understanding of scientific integrity
  10. Recognize scientific misconduct and fraud
  11. Prepare a public presentation
  12. Develop presentation skills in public speaking
  13. Develop interpersonal skills with the Supervisor and Co-supervisor

Program

Program: Definition of science and the scientific method; biomedical research main areas; what is needed to work in a lab or to be engaged in clinical or translational research;   main sources of scientific information; how to search and use bibliography; scientific integrity; misconduct and fraud; how to prepare and to perform a public speaking.

The student has to organize an individual work program, to be coordinated by the Supervisor with the support of the Co-Supervisor (optional). The completion and public defense of a project may take the following types:

Teaching methods and learning activities

The student work has individual character. Planning, contextualization and development of the research project should be monitored by a supervisor chosen by the student.

Training in complementary skills is achieved through thematic seminars organized throughout academic year.

Students’ guidance is done through email and Moodle platform and in-person support on fixed schedule or whenever requested.

Eligibility for exams

The evaluation considers the quality of research project (52.5% of the final mark), the quality of presentation and the oral defense work (35.0% of the final mark) and the scientific publication developed within the UC as 1st or 2nd author (1 2.5% of the final mark).

Approval conditions:
The student must have obtained, at least, 50% of the classification assigned to the Research Project and also in the public presentation.

Calculation formula of final grade

The evaluation considers the quality of research project (52.5% of the final mark), the quality of presentation and the oral defense work (35.0% of the final mark) and the scientific publication* developed within the UC as 1st or 2nd author (1 2.5% of the final mark).

* Date of publication of the thesis> = n-2, where n corresponds to the year of the date of delivery of the work with update of the Introduction and Discussion;  

Co-authorship up to 2nd place, as long as there is no equity in authorship.

The work can not be part of another academic thesis (eg. Master or PhD).
