Objectives

The main objectives of the proposed curricular unit are the teaching of Medical Microbiology. We consider fundamental to promote the development of new mental structures, capacities and new attitudes  so the students can analyse and solve problems

Learning outcomes and competences

Different competencies should be acquired by the medical students:

Basic competencies: learn how to learn, to know;
Transversal competencies: learn how to cooperate, to behave;
Specific competencies: learn how to do (specific objectives).

Competences:

To know how to select microbiological tests within the clinical context.

To know how to interpret the results of microbiological tests and to integrate results with clinical data.

Working method

Presencial

Program

Bacteriology – morphology and ultrastructure; growth and bacterial death. Bacterial metabolism and Genetics.

Most relevant bacterial human pahogens.

Health care related infections – HCRI control

Microbiological diagnosis and clinical correlation with outcome

Mandatory literature

Teaching methods and learning activities

The previewed formation activities, involving theoretical and practical formation, the active student participation in the solution of case-problems in a tutorial regimen, complemented with individual study will provide medical students a comprehensive perspective of the intricate involvement of medical microbiology in all fields of clinical medicine.
