To prepare the student for the resolution of most basic problems of a Family Planning consultation, in order to make him able to integrate primary health care teams, namely in the context of the support of unfavoured national and international communities. To provide the student with deeper knowledge and experience in the clinical area of the optional discipline, in order to make him more able to decide if he wants to pursue a career in this area.
The student should be able to develop competencies regarding:
- the understanding of the importance of Family Planning in the promotion of health and quality of life;
- the screening, diagnosis, medical treatment and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, gynaecologic cancers and chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension and dislipidemias;
- the detailed knowledge about the prescription of the most common conceptive and contraceptive methods;
- non directive counselling;
- legislation.
Competence to actively colaborate in a family planning consultation, including the prescription and application of the main pre-conceptive and contraceptive methods used at the office setting.
Family Planning in perspective: epidemiologic, demographic, antropologic, biologic, psychologic, ethical and juridical aspects. Screening, diagnosis, medical treatment and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, gynaecologic cancers and chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension and dislipidemias. Pre-cpnception, conception and contraception. Detailed knowledge about the action mechanisms, indications, contra-indications and prescription of the most common conceptive and contraceptive methods.
15 contact hours: 10 hours in the Family Planning outpatient clinic; 3 hours in seminars and 2 hours in theoretical and practical sessions with manikins.

Ten minutes eliminatory practical assessment, in a manikin, regarding very basic skills, with a maximal classification of 6.
Obligatory filling up of a practical log-book, regarding the execution of basic clinical skills, with a maximal classification of 6.
Twenty minutes discussion of a short activity report, with 4 pages maximum, with a maximal classification of 6.
Theoretical test with 10 multiple choice questions and 10 true/false questions, with a maximal classification of 2.
Final classification = sum of each of the assessment components.
