Objectives

To prepare students for routine management of labour and delivery, and handling of the main complications that occur during this period. At the end of training, students should feel comfortable integrating health teams that assist labour and delivery.
To allow students to evaluate their vocation to follow a career in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students should develop their competencies in:

 
diagnosis of labour 
routine management of normal labour 
fetal monitoring during labour 
diagnosis and management of labour dystocia 
support and assistance in vaginal delivery 
performance of selective episiotomy and perineal suturing 
execution of an instrumental delivery (vacuum and forceps) 
support and assistance of a breech delivery 
diagnosis and management of shoulder dystocia 
prevention and management of post-partum haemorrhage

Labour & delivery, routine care during labour & delivery, intrapartum fetal monitoring and non-reassuring fetal state, arrested labour, instrumental delivery, obstetric emergencies.

Eligibility for exams

Practical assessment in the delivery simulator to evaluate technical skills for management of delivery and handling of labour complications, requires a score of ≥ 50% (40% of final score).
Record of presence in labour ward and completed procedures with minimum requirements: assistance to 3 deliveries and two perineal corrections; obligatory (30% of final score).
Knowledge evaluation test, 20 questions with short answers (30% of final score).

Calculation formula of final grade

Final score: Sum of partial scores.
